Hi All,
I have bought another VK to add to the stable this one is a bit of a shed find. It is an 85 SL, almost factory original mechanically original and perfect, needs a respray due to humidity blisters from being stored and a bit of interior work to bring it up to scratch. Extremely low KMs for its age.
My problem was I wanted to build a track car but I dont think I can bring myself to do it to this one its just too nice.
VK 134 pack
4.9l B cast heads, HDT manifold, carb & dizzy work, 10 bolt salisbury factory 4 speed. I think I would have linch mob after me if I molest it.
How rare are these cars now?
So whats peoples thoughts
Mine thoughts are between (have have enough parts to do pretty much both options including all mouldings, rubbers etc.)
1 - Dont fiddle it too much, drop the original engine, gearbox out and drop in a spare EFI 5L, T5 and run it, and done right I can put it back to original without any damage.
2 - Put it back to original and do the odd club event in it and show it.
3 - something different
cheers
Scott

They aren't that rare Scott. If it was me, i would do it up for club events, hillclimbs etc. Prob with same motor/gearbox. Just up spec them to suit.
These are like BT1s, flogged a bit and not rare at all.
Cheers Damien"SL/ENUT" Smith, The SL/E Fanatic!
A lucky owner of 2 SL/E Commodores, a rare VB SL/E and a 2 tone VC SL/E. Just need a VH SL/E and have the set!
If it's in really good nic with low k's I'd always say keep it orginal. But, perhaps original with a few warm mods....?
The problem is this thing has barely been driven like under 30,000km, What I want to do is strip it out and put it on a diet making it as light as possible and convert it to a race car, I have pretty much everything to do it, just need a roll cage built and im good to go, I guess I just didnt want to butcher something that was rare (possibly worth money in the future)
cheers

A 26 year old car with less than 30,000 original km's is pretty rare in my book.
At the end of the day it's just a Commodore. Sure it may hold more value to some than others, but i wouldn't have any hard feelings about pulling it apart and going with your original plan as being a track car.
But what sort of condition does a car need to be in to become a track car? Maybe ideally in the back of your mind you wan't something that can take a few hits and bumps, even worse be written off. I don't think i'd want a car with too much sentaminetal value doing track work. I guess it comes down to how you view the car.
But other than that i'm with ari on this one. Thrash that mofo!! lol
No sentimental value for the car at all I have just bought it I pick it up on the W/e. I want a "thrash car" as my other VK has become too precious and also heavy for doing track runs this one will be a good 350kg lighter than my good one by the time I fit a roll cage etc. Once the roll cage is fitted theres no going back on the car easily.
As for a track car I plan to set it up on an A frame strip it back to a bare shell seam weld the body & reenforce certain mounts and points. Re wire the car to bare essentials for a race car, perspex windows the works.
I think I will start the car with a body tidy up and just drive it get the suspension ready then once im ready dive in the deep end with it.
cheers

lol...your in a dilemma like me I bang my head against a wall...do i go nuts on my VHSLE ive had for 17yrs or keep it near standard to keep the purists happy its in above average condition....however originally it was a 253 now its a 308 it had a 2.78 diff in it but now has a 308 it was alabaster white now its two pack white (although its alabaster just a lot whiter lol) interior is original (except steering wheel) it has 17 inch alloys now....however i have the sle wheels in perfect condition and even have the tyres lol and steering wheel....so heres the way i look at it...its not original however but its probably a lot better if i was to sell it would i lose money on it ...i doubt it....but i really want to respray it (it needs it ...the paint is still very good but its over 14 yrs old i owe to her)....but i just love to have it hugger orange...or two tone it or considering black and mocking it up near to a ss...ripping the engine out and spending some coin on the engine....but i cant bring myself to touch the car lol....so i am considering buying a vk and just going all out on it screw the purists it will be black it will have a later model interior it will be dropped it will have mini tubs deep dished rims and it will be old school 308 worked...it wont be the fastest vk but it will be mine.....and at the end of the day weather i do up the VH or do up another car it will be mine and that in my opinion is why we have these cars there art pieces in my eyes its your car folks do what you want not what others want you to do..![]()
the good thing about getting older....more toysthe bad news more headaches
if you have a tonne of spares, get another VK in reasonable condition and use that, the one you just bought sounds too good to pull apart :P
bud leave it and buy another standard vk bud they r like the brock wth out the price tag the engine is a brock my mum had 1 new and they pull in some money as they are not pulled to bits my thought any way why molest a car thats not the average sl or exec
thats if its a v7x engine code
I've a oct '85 in venus red with 84000ks V7X engine code. Stock as. No way would i fxxk with it.Get a shitter for that i reckon.
Leave it as is, maintain/restore what's there.
After it sitting in the shed as a shelf since its purchase, I have finally made a decision on what to do with it.
I am going to rebuild and restore it, I have started collecting parts and odds and ends that I dont already have. Once I finish my current project I have a few odd jobs to do to my current VK then Im stripping it to a body shell ready for a rebuild..
Thanks for everyones input
Scott
