I'm gearing up to do a rb30 conversion on my vb soon, i've been hunting through many threads and other forums for 3 months now, so many of the threads on this topic are very vague.
What i'm planning to do with mine is document each step and do a sticky as i have a few questions i seriously doubt will get a indepth answer as none of the above threads have outlined anything i needed to know.
I plan to start my conversion after the busy period for my work subsides.
A couple of things i've already sussed out that aren't mentioned anywher i've looked are:
Auto box but using original dash instead of VL dash: the VL speedo has a transducer on it to talk to the TCM, I believe you can swap the faces on the gauge and install the vl speedo into the vb-vh cluster and use the transducer wiring to talk to the auto computer, I'll attempt this theory and will advise the outcome on whether i could get it to fit into the early cluster next weekend.
Gearbox cross members: many conflicting responses with vague technical information on how to actually modify it to fit the early floorpan (I intend to at least resolve that for auto box)
I've looked at crs and a few other sites, you can buy a kit for the crossmember but you still have to weld it up yourself, seems a waste of money to buy a custom crossmember for the conversion but still have to make it yourself!!!! Why can't they provide one for those not able to get a welder etc that is able to bolted in with no fuss?
ETA on the start of my conversion will be most likely march 2012 and i'll do my best to educate anyone with the conversion as I'm just as sick of reading so many threads with no useful info in them or as I guess others are sick of having so many ask the same questions in the countless repeated threads also.
I have gutted a complete running VL sedan ready for this conversion so I'm only waiting for work to slow down so i've got the spare time to get into it.
mate good luck with the project im sure it will be a great conversion
the good thing about getting older....more toysthe bad news more headaches
My son and I did the RB30 and 5 speed in to a VH conversion. He was only 16 at the time and a lot of the descion making was his. We changed the entire loom to VL and the entire dash to VL. It got him interested and now he has just finished his time as an apprentice mechanic. He still has the car but it is now running a modified RB30 turbo engine, MX7 box, VL turbo diff punching out over 220RWkW.
I'm about to do this conversion to, the auto crossmember looks like a b#tch to sort but manuals quite easy. I'm going to use the vl dash in mine just paint it to match my interior, only prob i think I'll have will be the heater. Seem to remember there's a difference in the firewall between vc & vl, i no battery trays got to be changed from left to right & if i go manual I'll be cutting the area round the clutch cylinder & weld that into the vc so all that will line up. Dash frame has to be changed & the radiator support needs to be swapped over to vl. Might have found an rb20 manual vl with quite low k's for $200 so if that pans out I'll be grabbing that, least I'll be able to do the conversion & track down a good rb30 later once shes all sorted & legal. I've heard the front exhaust pipe needs bent down as well, were lucky over here in Nz as we don't have to run cats so that will sure make life easier......
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for sure, will be starting mine just after xmas at the latest......
There should be no need to modify the firewall. The clutch cylinder and pedal box should just bolt up without mods. We used the fan and heater system out of a non aircon car and modified the vent pipework to suit. The fan sits in the plenum under the bonnet.
Sounds good to me, must have been the vent pipework i spotted. Was a few years ago i was toying with the idea with a vb & a 3.3 injected 6. Ended up putting it in a vk wagon.......
Picking up a Vl auto wagon tonight, sweet runner so that's going to be my parts wagon for the conversion. Had a look at the firewall and the difference is the fans hard on the left where as the Vc's is in the center so wondering if you can use the Vc heater with the Vl loom or need to cut out the Vl firewall section & weld that into the Vc???
Apart from that and the auto cross member she'll be pretty straight forward for me to swap her over.....
