Just a quick one anyone have good or bad reports about the Japanese reproduction gears for the aussie 4 speeds, rebuilding up an M21 today and 1st gear on the cluster is buggered, I can get new Japanese or NOS Holden at twice the price.

probably be better off just buying another box for a few hundred dollars. or better yet spend the extra and by a muncie and know that your good for about 500hp
So are they as strong as the originals?
The box im building is going to be used on the odd track day, it is going to be specifically built for the task and have a few mods done to it to handle more grunt, bigger front main bearing, more substantial input shaft retainer, beefed up second gear, improved oil flow.
I have other boxes sitting there T5s, even access to a top loader but I want the car quickly changable from street to track. Im building up another 304 soon specifically for the task, I dont want to have to change tailshafts, issues with speedo cables etc, just want to undo the linkages off the box, about a dozen bolts and in and out.

Umm, no. Only good for a bit of towing. There is a dude that sells proper aussie 4 speed tough gear sets, cluster, the how shebang. Can't remember the name though.

on ebay i've seen sellers that offer reco boxes with heavy duty (race prep) internal mod's with the option of having XU1 ratios in your V8 box. Might be more what you're needing with odd track day here and there. The extra closer ratio's (XU1) really make a difference with the xu1's.
I'm tempted to go via this route in my vh ss if i can't find a t5g soon...
I have seen them on ebay as well, I can build one myself just need gears. The strengthening mods are simple. I have a contact for original holden gears but they are more expensive thats all, is the others were still good then I was going to go for them.
The M21 is a close ratio box
For your VH Even a T5 would be fine, I run one in my other VK no worries, its actually a dream gearing wise 3.45 diff and T5 is the perfect combination. If you want an awesome box have a look at a TKO
