Default exhaust manifold overheating on startup

Hey guys I just finished swapping the original fuel manifold and varajet carb for a 350 holley and a redline torker 2 manifold i've also replaced the rocker cover with a new alluminum one. After finaly getting it all set up and being able to kick the engine over after weeks of sitting I noticed that after not even a minute of idling my exhaust manifold is hot as hell to the point of smoking and producing a pretty bad burning smell I'm just wondering if its got to do with the fuel/air mix and it also doesn't idle well at all I have to keep pulling o the throttle to keep it going does anyone know what I need to do to get my baby banging like a champ again I really miss driving it

Are you sure it isnt just shit from the manifold change burning of the exhaust.....there is pretty hot stuff leaving the engine so you could expect it to get hot and smoke until all your old greasy finger marks and oil burns off the exhaust.

If its idling bad as long as you have your manifold gasket and carb gasket sealed so ther isnt any vacuum leaks you have to set the float level first by pulling the inspection plug out of the bowl and see if the level is right...it should be just wetting the bottom of the thread and you need to raise or lower the needle valve to suit and then when the float level is right go for the idle mixture screw on the metering block to get the idle right.

If it is excessively hot to the point that revving the engine for a couple of minutes make the extractors glow red will indicate running very lean.

need you to clarify a few things:
how hot to you determine as hot?
extractors? or factory cast exhaust manifold? if factory cast, you may have a stuck butterfly valve (pollution gear) which is meant to restrict exhaust flow untill warm up.

Whenever you work on an engine ane renew gaskets, the gaskets will make a smell and sometimes smoke a little as the sealant in the little holes (note square holes with cream coloured stuff) melt and seal up the mating surfaces.
any grease and oils that have gotton onto the exhaust when working on it will burn and smoke away untill the contaminants have burnt off...
your original post hasn't given us enough details to give a definative answer yet.

Thanks markovr I had done some reading and a lot of guys were saying that its probably oil and crap burning off gonna get the idle sorted out soon so thanks for the how too gonna come in really handy

its pretty much gets too hot to touch after about 30 seconds of reving and idling it an aftermarket exhaust that got put on a few years ago I never really noticed how hot they got when all the old gear was hooked up so maybe its just normal and I'm freaking out over nothing I just didn't think they got that hot that quickly
