    Smile "k" frame confusion...????

    Hi There,

Need some help... project car is originally a VK 6 cyclinder, I am building a blue meanie replica. Is there any difference between 6 cylinder and V8 K frame??? If so, how do you tell the differences??? Have spoken to wreckers but unfortunately still confused.....

    Any help will be appreciated

I do believe that the K-frames are different cause of the weight difference.. So I'd say the K-frame are stronger then the V6kframe. Might have different engine mounting things.
    but noticaeable different.. not sure.

Thanks to all those who replied..... it has been a big help!

This forum is new to me and very happy with response so far....

Look forward to talking in the future, no doubt other issue's will come up in my build project! The project car is a Berlina with cerulean interior which is a big help already. Engine will be VT EFI 5.0lt, 5 speed manual with big braking system.

if you're planning on going EFI 5L, then I'd suggest using a later VN-VS k-frame and steering rack, otherwise you are going to run into steering rack clearance issues with the headers. I've got a VS k-frame in mine

Difference is in the intermediate shaft, different length ( longer shaft on a manual i believe). Also i got told the strut tops are different to increase castor which intern changes the steering geometry slightly. With power steer having more castor which creates more steering effort which is then overcome by the the power steering anyways.

I tried converting my manual steer VB to a power steer - ran into this issue, power rack simply would not fit on a manual k-frame. Ya see, on all V8 models power steering was a mandatory option. I checked my 1980s parts catalougues and low and behold the 6 (MS) and the 6 (PS)/V8 racks are seperate items each with a different part number. Hope this helps.

I have a vh 6 cyl that started out life with a manual steer rack and later I got a power rack off a v8 vh and it bolted straight up to the original k frame with no clearance/fitting dramas and its like that many years later...maybe earlier cars had some differences but vhs dont seem to.

does it have to be a v8 rack or are the 6's the same?

V8 & V6 racks are the same, just got to find yourself a VL intermediate steering shaft to fit them to the VK

I used my original k frame and rack. I had a 202 and have a 304 now with CAE Headers. It's a tight fit to get them in but they're sitting comfortably now. I'd go a Vn-Vs kframe and power steering if I had to do it again though to give me more room

I Converted my 202 manual steering to power steering and the Intermediate shaft is shorter than the manual one.VLs have a different powersteering rack than VH so the shaft is different.
