Sounds like you need to replace you're valve stem oil seals
On startup could be either stem seals or rings, I would do a compression test first.
Take off sounds like rings as stem seals normally do it on back off.
Is it using much oil? how many kms are on it? whats the top of the head look like?
I would say its probably shagged, so a thinker oil wont hurt, but if it was only stem seals you risk not lubing the topend & bearings properly
You could go to Penrite HPR 40 which is a 25w70 oil and is recommended for old engines/oil consuming engines. where 20w50 is normally used.

yeah thats the one i put my bad 25-70
high performance/oil consumption.
where can i do a compression test?
it was using a bit of oil but ill try it out with the new stuff.
kms on my dash atm is 222*** but i changed it. it was 174*** but that wasnt the orginal speedo anyway.
i havent pulled the top end apart much. just the rocker cover. it wasnt to bad. one rocker was really loose and others not to tight.
thoughts?
Compression check - this is how it is done....
1. Get a screw-in type compression gauge from repco.
2. pull out spark plugs, and take out dizzy rotor.
3. Screw gauge into no.1 with foot flat to floor on accelerator, crank engine over a few times (try different numbers of turnovers - I use 4 myself...)
4. record this figure in PSI or KPA.
5. Repeat for cylinders 2-6.
6. Figures should be equal within 200kpa, according to my 1984 Valvoline lube and tune-up manual.
Hope this helps....
