    Default Thrown a wheel bearing?

    Hey guys,

Ever since hitting a gutter I've had a tick that seems to come from the front end somewhere, which speeds up with the car's (not engine) speed. Last night on a long drive, the tick developed into a whirring noise, sounding not unlike a jet engine (only quieter) which changes pitch with speed.

I'm assuming wheel bearing, because it's about the only thing that I can think of that would be making odd noises proportionate to the speed - before I go buying a new set, can anyone confirm this for me?

    Cheers,
    Chris.

Yeah it sounds like a wheel bearing, just be careful replacing it if oyu dont have a press to ress int he new bearing use a soft block of wood to take the shock from the hammer when you bash it in that way you wont damage the outter part of the bearing

    cheers

Okay - I'm lost - every time I've taken my hubs off, the bearings have just sat on the axle either side of the hub (one behind, one in front) - what am I supposed to be pressing?

    Cool

There is an inner & an outer bearing race....the race against the shaft (outer race)has to be tapped off..a very tight slide fit......

the new inner bearings will need to be pressed on because they arent as thrashed out as your old ones

    Cool

Presses on, as in, put the new race on, then put the old one on top of it, then tap the OLD one down .....that way you are not distorting the new one at all...once it is on the shaft, use a punch to tap around it evenly......

your new wheel bearing kit will come with news cones as well, thats what the bearing runs in. use a small pin punch to hit out, use the old cone to hit the new one in easy as.

All i do is using high temp wheel bearing grease work it though the new wheel bearing rollers untill they are completely covered. Next when I press the new bearing outter into the rotor or stub axel adapter (VT brakes) I coat it very generously with grease as well. When fitting the stub adapter or rotor back in with the new bearings keep rotating it as you tighten the nut.
I use about 2-3 heaped tablespoons of grease, but even at 30-40,000km they still dont need repacking. Although I still check them.
I reuse the previous split pin at this stage road test the car then pull check/nip up the nut if required then fit the new split pin.

    cheers
