Hey guys and girls
I'm new to the forums, so if someone has already asked a question like this, Im sorry, I did do a search in the forum but I couldn't find anything like this. Anyway, here is my question. I have a VK Commodore Berlina. I would like to know if anyone has the same car and if their roof and other parts of the car have been damaged by the sun. I am pretty sure the sun has done the damage. Basically it has made clear plastic peel away from the paint. It's a very big eye sore. I am just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, what I need to do to fix it, and how much it might set me back to get it fixed. I have added a photo so that you can see what I'm talking about.
Any help is greatly appreciated
Cheers
Luke
i have a red vk thats fading bad , but thats just the color red in general lol..best bet is a respray. if u know someone it may work out cheaper for u , but depending on ur options u choose with paint etc. can cost u a fair bit if ur gonna go all out with it.

Yup, mine is the same! I have a green berlina and all the paint is peeling off on the bonnet and the roof (cracks in roof paint as well). Rather ugly hey? I plan to get it sprayed one day. I think I have enough paint in the shed for the bonnet., just need to get someone to do it...so I guess that will cost a few hundred.

my vh is faded like fcuk. maybe just give it a lite sand to get all the peeling crap off, that way when people see it they will think ur doing something about it. when really ur just doin a bit of work for a respray. if u get what i mean
mines the same colour, did the same thing, and as with everyone else here...its respray time
I guess the general consensus is that I get it resprayed, therefore my next question would be, does anyone know a rough figure of how much it would cost me?
well i have the same problem 2....i asked around a bit and it goes ne where from about $1000 to $2000 at cbr restorations for a normal respray then i spose the sky is the limit $$$$
damn!! I dont know if im willing to spend that much on this car. I don't want to keep it for too long, but I need to have sumthing done about it by the time it comes to selling the car.
I have the exact same problem, same colour, same model. Mine a bit worse though, it started rusting all over the roof. Im going to start sanding it off and priming it. Then ill paint it white.
yeh ive got some surface rust there as well
when ure selling it just bang some wax on it and nobody will notice, the rust is a similar colour to the original
$1000 to $2000?? What sort of paint have you got??
You only need a partial respray I guess, just get the roof done or something. I think I bought some paint for mine and it cost about 150 - 200. Now, if I can get someone who can paint it for free....lol. I think I might have a crack at it myself.
I am currently doing a respray on my VK, complete body strip down to bare metal, plastic & fibreglass, refit & repair the body kit etc. I am spraying the engine bay, inside of the door jams, mudguards, doors etc basically the whole car. It is being sprayed in 2pac retail cost of such a respray would be around the $5000-$6000 mark.
For an external tidy up in acrylic or possibly 2pac possibly $1500-2000. Its the attention to detail & perfection that you pay for in the extra time to prep the car to be sprayed.
You may be able to save money if you do decide to do some of the work yourself, ie pulling the car appart, if you decide to rub the car down you must do it correctly else it will show up in the finnished product.
cheers

It's all caused by the "Dealer's respray" One quick coat of clear makes it shine like new and helps it sell itself. They never do it right so from 12 - 24 months down the track it is stuffed unless you keep it waxed weekly and out of the sun. The clear coat does not bond with the paint so a little too much heat and it bubbles. Solution = respray.
Holden and Ford also had the stupidity to do this on some models that didn't come out of the paint booth too well.

thats right vk berlina i just did the same to mine bare metal sr=trip engine bay the lot all my self as i am a spraypainter but my color cost a bit more and is around $7000 - $8000 dololars worth but i paid for paint thats it no booth hire boss is a mad personide post a few pics if i knew where to any helpers there
Email me your pics to fentos(at)gmail.com (replacing (at) with @ obviously) and I will post them for you if you would like.
I'll be doing the same on my VC in the next couple of years. Plans are to cut out all rust areas and MIG weld replacement sections on a rotisserie. I'll be doing it all myself so labour time isn't important.Originally Posted by vkberlina
Couldn't agree more, especially when it comes to areas that are showing signs of rust. I'm happy to post up a picture of the current status of a repair job I did to my car 5 years ago before I knew much about cars and rust. Took the lower half of the rear 1/4 back to bare metal and I spent hours body filling and sanding it smooth. But I didn't do the right preparation to the exposed metal (which I didn't know about until after the fact). Looked fantastic once I buffed the paint, but in the time since even sitting dry in a garage 24 hours a day the dreaded tin worm has returned with a vengeance.Originally Posted by vkberlina

I suggest getting your commodore's doors, quarter panels, bootlid and bonnet, roof profesionally buffed. If your car's sun damage is'nt to bad it will come out. My friends VN Commodore looks really good and you can hardly notice the damage. But if the paints really bad just get it resprayed.
I'm not sure if the paint is damaged, but there is like a plastic covering that is peeling back. What would a buff do? Also, could I just get another clear coat or watever the plastic stuff is put back on?
If the clear is flaking its respray time, whats buffing going to do chip up more clear, and probably buff through the colour into primer while your at it.
only way to fix it isa respray.

Spot on as per usual Scott. My VS stato recently started peeling on the clear coat only on the bonnet. Silver underneath is fine. I knew that meant it needed a respray but in the meantime I thought what the heck, nothing to lose why don't I sand back the clear in one large patch and put new clear over the top and see how it turns out? Result - slightly better than the flaked peeling appearance but the original clear coat is still deteriorating underneath.
b1b2b3 just go the respray route and save yourself time and money.
Just a small idea for ya'll to try,(if ur selling) Just give it a lite scuff an then give it a lite coat of clear.Thats what you will find most car yards doing these days. its friggin nasty i know but it works
