I have heard of someone putting a Turbo 700 gearbox behind a 308, and i am wanting to put one in my commodore behind a 253. Has anyone had any experience with this issue and if so can i have all the info neccesary to do the conversion...
Cheers...
the bellhousing on your engine needs to be a turbo pattern to fit..... 253's and some 308's dont have them so a change of bellhousing might work if your keen on the box
You will need to buy an adaptor kit from Castlemaine Rod shop or a speed shop. It consists of a spacer plate and a set of special machined eccentric bushes and studs. You will have to probably customise your tailshaft, speedo cable, trans cross member and t-bar shifter. I don't think it is a bad idea as a decent 253 with a 4 speed auto and the right gearing would be a good set up.
Either the adapter plate, or u could get ur block redrilled to turbo pattern. Prolly a bit overkill as the whole motor has to be stripped down completely, but it can be done. Either that or weld up the trimatic holes, then get a ruler, pencil, drill and tap/die set out and go ur hardest.....but don't coz it's dodgy as fark, but I do know someone who has done it and they rekon it worked. The adapter plate way is the easiest!
