hey everyone,
i've just retired my old vn, which is gonna be sold soon, and at the moment im driving my other car- a grampa spec vk sl carby 6! the car drives like a dream, is in great condition and has low kms! the only problem is at the moment its not a looker, but this will soon change!
now im just wondering, what kinda mods can i do to my vk without goin overboard? either power or looks (bear in mind i dont have the cash to pay for a v8 conversion or anything like that)
so far i have had it lowered and have polished vl calais wheels
my plans so far:
complete VL calais interior i have waiting to go in
calais side panels
calais backlights
new instrument cluster... possibly berlina or calais (i don't really know the difference between the two as up until now ive only dealt with my vn!)
nice steering wheel
extractors and exhaust
central locking, fuel cutoff switch, alarm and immob.
ive also got a set of decent 6x9s and coaxs, an amp and an mp3 player to go in
tinted windows
thats about all i can think of... is there anything else i can do?
cheers
get the head worked and a mild cam to make the new exhaust and extractors really rumble
Cutoff switch isn't going to do too much for you... mechanical fuel pump!
Best mods: VH distributor, VH air intake and snorkel and exhaust/extractors. First two are almost a must if you want ANY performance/economy, third also helps significantly because removes the EFE system.
Next step up is an EFI conversion, then you're moving into valves/porting/bottom end work, injectors, engine management... you can go pretty wild and get stupid N/A figures of up to 200bhp if you're prepared to spend the time and the cash on it![]()
ah yea mechanical fuel pump... like i said im used to working on VNs...
anyway, why are the VH bits better for the car, are they just a better design? seems odd that if they are better they stopped using them..
They tried to trick it up with fancy electronics and sensors, and failed miserably, it's just a poor unreliable design - plus you can't change the timing or the ignition curve!
As for the aircleaner, all the 3.3L ones have been very restrictive - the 2.85L one has a much wider mouth and cold air ducting.
extractors, get rid of est and get vacume advance timing, get rid of the varajet carby ( piece of shit) if u have the facilities make an adaptor plate ( adaptors for varajet to stromberg arnt manufactured) to suit a single barrel stromberg with manual choke its a cheap replacement with no flatspot at all.
cheers chris
yeah the stombergs are nice and simple but a 32/36 weber would give it some guts.
the weber is more fuel efficiant that the varajet and holey with very impressive power.
get the calais from grill and get a 2.75 -3" exhaust for i and it will sound phat as!
