G'day,
A mate of mine recently bought a VH Commodore SL as his first car. He doesn't know much about cars and he isn't mechanicly minded, so he asked me to give him a hand getting it on the road. However my expertise in old Holdens only really extends to Kingswoods, so I've got a couple of questions myself. Its got a few wiring issues, its left headlight stays on constantly - you have to disconnect the battery to turn it off - and the right headlight is full of water and doesn't work, I assume due to corroded contacts.
We're also trying to wire up a stereo and are having some trouble with that. We were unable to find the appropriate 3a fuse at any auto parts retailer and the closest we got was a 5a fuse. We tried to wire in a shitty head unit to test it and which got power and worked untill we realised it was smoking from inside! I guess that was down to the fuse. Would it be ok to use a glass caniter type of fuse in its place?
Also, we had to replace the altenator and we used one from a VC that was kicking about and once we removed the air con hoses it fitted, but the belt (VH) is too slack, as you can twist it about 180 degrees instead of the normal 90 or so. Will fitting a VC belt cure this?
Lastly, does anyone have a wiring Diagram?
Cheers,
Dicko
The cheapest and probably the best way to get wiring diagrams, state library, photocopy the Holden VH commodore supplement manual. I used it to re-wire my VH and, touch wood, everything works including the engine illumination light, ridiculous idea if you ask me. Victorian state library has a copy, or atleast had a copy.
As for that 3a fuse, i blew it when i was installing a CB (although it didn't last long), the only thing i could find (as no places around had the fuse with the pointy tips) was a normal flat end 3a fuse from dicksmith, which was slightly too small, and just wrapped the ends up in foil so it sticks where it's supposed to.
I'm sure this isn't the best way to go about it, but that's all i could think of, and it's lasted well over 3 months so far.
