I have an 84 VK and my starter motor was screwed, so I bought a second hand one from a wreckers, I have a stuffed back so I called a mobile mechanic to fit it for me, $150 bucks later and the bloody thing did'nt work, the mechanic told me it was the starter motor itself and there was nothing he could do, so he still charged me $150 bucks and left, I then removed the one he put in (I had to drop the exhaust to get it out) and took it back to the wreckers, only for them to tell me that it worked fine...... so they changed it anyway to a high torque one so I could get it in easier, I had this one tested by an auto elec, I have now put that one in and tried to start it but it only ticked from the solinoid, I then checked that it was getting power with a test light and it was fine so I tried to crank it again but got nothing, no tick, nothing. I checked when it was dark with my lights on and they were dimming, so I assumed my battery was flat and tried jump starting it, but nothing again, I then tried to spark the starter motor itself and it sounded like it was just spinning (like a zzinging sound, sounded like it did when the auto elec tested it out of the car) I now have the battery charging to try it again, but I am wondering what I am missing, and if anyone has any other suggestions of what I can do or test. While I am ok with engines (ie: changing the starter motor) I am not fully up with the technical talk. I am at a loss but I'm sure there is more to it and I am getting pretty frustrated.![]()
Got it started thanks anyway!!!!!!![]()

Was the problem the battery?Originally Posted by bexx79
Had the same problem myself, we replaced the alternator with one from the wreckers, that shat itself a couple of days later, took it to the auto electrics to check out the alternator & starter motor. They replaced the alternator but the next day it wouldnt go at all, went back to get a new starter motor and after installing it it still wouldnt tick over. After trying countless thing in an attempt to give it life we eventually thought it may not be earthing properly. Needless to say the earth was coated in grime, after cleaning the connection it ticked over![]()
Nice $300 lesson there.
Damn. What a bummer. I wish I was there. Yeah earth problems can be a complete swine and any dodgy wiring at all in a car should always be replaced whether it was the insulation melted or frayed leads or even like you said about corroded grime leads.
I would have replaced the whole lead.Originally Posted by MidniteSpookshow
Any fraying or whatever, I replace with new leads. And you would get less resistance and a better connection anyway.
