ok, i need your guys input, i am going to buy a vk efi 202 which has a Borgwarner M76 manual gearbox, i currently have a trimatic 3 speed auto (the M76 will have enough strength as my 202 is stock, just has extractors), i need to know exactly what needs to be swapped over to make my auto into a manual. Especially, will i need to swap the diff over? and how much do you think a mechanic would charge to swap it over for me?
thanks,
Jim
Diff will be fine, it's just the tailshaft you need to swap. Keep your existing rear half of your tailshaft, and bolt that to the front half of your tailshaft for the M76 (they're green as far as I know).
BUT - If you're converting, I wouldn't go the M76. I'm doing an M76 swap in mine only because mine's already a manual and it's a bolt-on job, same clutch (which is a $450 6 month old one that I couldn't let go to waste) etc etc. If you have to get all the parts, it's a far better idea to go a Supra or a Celica box.
Well, as i said, i can get a vk 202 efi (which doesn't have a fuel pump) for 200 bucks, and was only wanting the manual (maybe a few other bits and pieces). From what i have read, the M76 can handle a stock 202, so i thought i'd give it a go if it doesn't cost me fortune to get it done by a mechanic.
It's been suggested by a few people that the M76 won't hold up under a VK EFI setup - vkberlina has in fact witnessed this occuring in his own car. I do., however, know of a bloke running a good 120rwkw + a 1000 shot of NOS on his EFI VK - and that's held up under a LOT of punishment. He did, however, strengthen his box - through a DIY rebuild and nitriding the relevant components (namely 1st, 2nd, and 5th). I'll also be attempting this when time permits.
well, i just rang one of the mechanics in my area, and he said it would cost around 900 - 1000. that's to get the auto out of the VH, the manual out of the VK, and only put the manual back in (the VH).
does this price seem reasonable? as i really have no idea on how much it should cost. Also, he said the main sticking point would be the pedals, is this true? if so, how easy is it to remove them, because i was thinking i do that myself.
the pedals are easy it is two clips and push the pin out the manual pedals go in with the same pins you dont need to remove the bracket it is the same in manual and auto (side note the pins are the perfect size for removing the spigot bearing just pack it with grease and tap the pin in and repeat until the bearing comes out. this is on an m20)
the pedals aren't that hard to remove and replace with manual one's except gettin to the bolt at the top of the bracket!! i've done this and you need to drop the steering column to make it easy!!! NOt much trouble
plus trim the paneling under thye steering column to fit the clutch pedal
i did a conversion for around 200-300 but i already had a celica box ready, to give ya an idea on price
