Check your battery connections are clean & tight on both ends.
Sounds like it could be the starter motor solenoid though.

First make sure that it is the starter motor that is clicking and not a relay. If it is the starter motor solenoid it is quite easy to repair with the right equipment. However most auto electrical shops would encourage you to service the whole starter motor due to the age of the vehicle.

Ahh a 78 VB. Love em! What a classic.

That click is your starter motor problem. What you need to do is get a metal faced hammer and whack (not super hard!) the starter motor casing to free it up a bit. Just crawl under the side of the car and you should see it bolted to the front of the transmission connected to the motor. You should then be able to start her up.
The bad news is that you will have to frequently whack it to start it! The second bad news is you need to get a recoed one. If you know a friend who works on cars, you can get them to unbolt it (two bolts, 2 cables) and take it to an auto electrician to have it recoed. It would cost about $150-$160 to do this. Or you can book your car in at a auto elec and they will do the lot but might charge a $20-50 labor fee to fit a new one.

    Good luck!
