    Default rims on vh

    hey guys and girls

just wondering what i would have to do to put a set of 18x8 vy ss mag wheels on the vh?

would there be much modfying? engineers certificate needed? rubbing on guards etc

    cheers

If the overall diameter of the wheels is close to your original's (so use the correct profile tyre) you shouldn't have any problems in that regard. The only thing which i am unsure about would be the width of the rim, even still, i would think that they'd fit pretty well. I have seen many pictures of vb-vk's with 18's or even 19's on them, so they should fit ok.

You will need to roll your guards and maybe change the speedo gear cog on the end of your speedo cable i think but i have seen VB to VK with 18" rimes and low profile tyers on they look all right

ok, my mate has a vk on 18" mags, and all he needed was the guards rolled (this was mostly because the car was also lowered)

now, since your vh probably came with 14" steel wheels (mine did) these 18" wheels would be too large (as you are only allowed to alter the wheel diameter by 2").

you can get an engineers certificate to say the wheels meet adr requirements blah blah but i think that will cost you around $500.

if you don't get this done u can get defected for the larger wheels, but more imortantly your insurance company can refuse to cover u in an accident because your car is not roadworthy.not meeting ADR requirements. i've heard of a person with aftermarket cold air induction having an accident and the insurance company refused to cover him because he hadn't made them aware of the modification (needless to say he is taking it to court).

so yeah, just keep that in the back of your head
cat? isnt that an animal? no i dont want one in my exhaust system thankyou very much...

I thought that if the wheels had the correct profile tyres, which make the overall diameter legal. Each state has different rules on how much bigger the overall size can be, in the ACT it is 15mm larger, or 25mm smaller. So i would have thought that if the wheels are roadworthy in your state, the insurance company shouldn't have anything to bitch about. It's just a matter of rolling your gaurds if it needs it.

    That won't stop 'em though.

RACV allows up to 1" larger than the largest size for the model. EG. on VH the largest rims you could option were 15". So the largest RACV would allow on that model is 16".

    I hope that helps.

    hey all

well i prob will be buyin the rims of my work mate when i can get my car rego'd in about 6 months. i live in victoria so does anyone know the rules about this in vic?

about the size my mate at work has these on his vn ss and he gets away with it fine. i always thought they were too big legally for the vn?

well i can put them on and if i get a defect notice guess ill just have to take them off.

does it cost much to get guards rolled?

    cheers

I think in Vic (dont quote me on this) that you can legally go 2" larger than the biggest factory fitted wheels.

Remember that factory fitted can also include HSV/HDT variants, this is how my brother got away with it.. VL Walkinshaw had 16"s, so he has 18"s

Well in that case, you could get away with 18's on a VH as the VH SS Group 3 had 16 inch Centra Wheels.

That doesnt work here because HSV/HDT had the tyre placards to back up the wheels... So here you can only go 2 up from what YOUR car had... not 2 up from any option on your model

I know my mate had a hard time with coppers one nite about his Holden By Design - had to show them the tyre placard.... His HBD came with 18's so he can go 20's

What offset do you recomend for a VH with 18" and 225/40? What are they standard?

If you look up the wheel deal on this forum you will find a spread sheet outlining what wheels are legal, you will need 225/40x18 tyres for it to comply.
I had 17x8" VY rims on my VC with 225 tyres and there was very little clearance between the tyre and front strut. Guards should not need to be rolled, my VC is lowered and had no problems. Sold the 17's and now have 15x8" Simmons 3 piece.

yes, but the question is what offset? My Vp was 31P, what is a VH 38P?? The wheels I am buying are blank centres and can be machined 35P - 45P. What is best offset for the 225/40x18?

thats funny cause i have 17x8" vt clubby wheels on my vh with 235/45 17 and have 10-15mm of clearance between the tyre and strut, my car is also lowered and doesn't have guards rolled. the only problem i have is being a wagon even with the slightly wider vl disc diff it scrubs the inner wheel whel when goin up driveways.

as mentioned, if you get the right profile (which you need to by law in order to maintain the same rolling diameter) then you can fit basically any diameter wheel on your car without modification or speedo gear correction.

However when it comes to the legalities of it all, different states have different laws. Qld you are allowed any diameter wheel, providing the rolling diameter is within a set tolerance

there is no 2'' inch rule in victoria.
it was phased out years ago.
i was under the impression there was too a while ago but i was correctly informed by the wheel deal.
check his spreadsheet as said above.

Darren is right above in QLD you can change rim size as long as overall diameter stays the same as original (engineer blue plater has said) thats looking after my VB blue platin... im runnin 245/35/18 on rear and 235/35/18 front

The wheels tuck in the guards very good but i dont know what offset the are???
