    Default Pinging

I have a 202 EST and most of the time it pings if i accelerate normally under load. Im using 98 octane fuel and lead additive. What other thing can i do to fix the problem? Would changing the ignition system do anything?

I once had this problem on a red 202. I'd tune it to factory spec, but it'd still ping going up hills. Long story short, it was the advance springs in the distributor. Apparently they stretch over time. Changed them and all was well again.

Disconnect your vacuum advance on the distributor and see what happens.

It might even just need proper tuning.

Probably not much. Vacuum advance on Commodores is only used at idle. At higher speeds, the distibutor uses centrifugal advance. It was the springs on the cetrifugal advance 'weights' I was referring to.

Normally, I'd agree, but his car has EST.

No vac advance on EST guys!

I don't know how many times this has been said, but...

DITCH THE EST! You'll never regret it dude.

My car has never pinged (except when I've advanced it too far) with my reco VH dizzy. And that's at 9deg too!

That's pretty good. What mods have you done (apart from the dizzy)?

Sometimes it doesnt ping at all no matter how hard i push it, seems to do it when the engine warms up. Im thinking maybe the est module advances too far when the coolant sensor warms up, In which case i could bypass it with a resistor.

I will look into getting the VH distributor.

Seriously ditch the EST, It was the 1st mod I did on my run about VK.

Like 2min after I bought it it was in the car. I bought the car and exactly where the car sat when I paid the money I put the dizzy in infront of the guy I bought it off and drove it home.

I run approx 10deg advance on a mild 202 running 98 octane fuel, solid as a rock never pings.

    cheers
    Scott

Not much at all, surprisingly! It's a fully reco'd dizzy with regraph (which probably helps a lot - it's curved for 95RON now, not 97 as per factory specs) - took the head off and cleaned the chambers, ports and valves, VERY minor porting (so minor that I don't think it could be even called porting)... bottom end is bog-stock.

I'm probably only pushing slightly more than factory figures - mods are probably worth a good 30HP but given wear on the engine..

Mine pings too : ( I hate it. But i think she just needs a good tuning....if that doesn't fix it, then i don't know what will! Mines a VK EFI, if that makes any difference?

Mine used to ping very badly. Changed heads, decarboned, lower compression etc, still no good. Changed to elec. dizzy and haven't looked back. Just too easy. Check that the EST module is working properly. I bet it is the problem, just easier to change dizzy.
    Cheers, Big Al
