Hi i have just purchased a complete vk commodore in a 5 speed as i want to do a conversion with my other vk with a trimatic, I know the gearbox that is suppose to be in it is a m76 and i know they are not good, however today i pulled it out of the car and am pretty sure it is not the m76 but rather a celica steel case which is good for me. I was just wondering if there was anyway to know for sure? Does anyone have any pictures of a steel case celica 5 speed box that i can use to check or any other help will be appreciated.
many thanks
peter
attached is a pic of an M76 5 speed, if its a borgwarner M76 it will have an ID tag at the rear of the transmission with the borgwarner logo on it.
A celica 5 speed will most certainly have a bell housing made by either Dellows or Castlemaine rod shop.
Behind a stock or mild 202 carbie a M76 will hold up ok, just dont give it a hiding. The main thing they cant handle is torque so dont boot it in 1st or compression brake in 1st.
