Has anyone had an auto to manual conversion performed on there 84 vk if so roughly how much is it? is it hard to do? should i get a pro to do it? i have alot of family and friends who have worked on cars all there life or are mechanics so i have the help if i need it but mainly a price and is it worth it
i have no idea for a Vk, but i its any guide, a VP costs about 2K. Its hard for those without alot of time and equiptment and it is very worth it.
aZk.
I was quoted at least a grand for swapping a manual box into an auto car. That's not including any parts, that'd be if you had the two cars, and just wanted a astraight swap. I think that you'd want to go a Celica or Supra gearbox, as they're more sturdy, so that's add a heap to the price.
the last owner of my vk converted it to an auto the **** now i got to change it back
If things didn't change too much from the red motors it is very easy to do yourself. Ask your mechanic friends/family to help and put on some beers and a bbq. Done in a couple of hours at most.
Having said that:
Don't know if the VK had a seperate clutch pedal (as in seperate unit from the brake pedal) and the clutch cable fitment can be fiddly.
No idea if you need a different driveshaft either.
A VK expert on this Forum will be able to tell you exactly what's involved.

About a month ago i just performed the conversion on my vk commy from the auto box to a celica 5 speed cast iron case. I have wanted to do it for a while now then a donor car came up cheap enough, the donor car was a 202 carbie which was meant to have a borgwarner m76 in it, but when i pulled the gearbox out of the car i found to my surprise it was a celica cast iron 5 speed (lucky for me) as it was going behind a 202 efi which would be too powerful for the m76. Anyways the job is a big job but if you do the research and know what has to be done from the start then you should have no worries, i am no mechanic but i knew what had to be done in what order and it went together easy. Just a tip though when you put it all back together put new parts in (everything under the bell housing) such as clutch, pressure plate, spigot bush, machine your flywheel and thrust bearing to avoid having to replace them later at a later date it is much easier now when the gearbox is out already. The total time for the job is 2 full days work from start to finish. but i did mine in parts:
thursday arvo (3 hours) - remove pedal box and gearbox from donor car and other parts needed
Friday Arvo (2 hours) - remove dash, auto pedal box and steering column then replace new manual pedal box and rebuild dash.
Sat (all day) - Drove to get new parts under the bell housing then in afternoon removed auto gearbox and drive shaft and prepared the car for manual gearbox to go in on sunday morning.
Sunday (6 hours) - Install flywheel, clutch, pressure plate etc then install new gearbox (just a tip make sure your car is high enough as i only had the gearbox height under the car which made it hard to lift and manouver the gearbox in such a small space this took alot of time to get the box lined up and in place so you can save yourself about and hours if you have lots of room) After the box was in start putting it all back together gearbox crossmember, driveshaft, clutch cable etc. Fill gearbox with oil then check all bolts and nuts then away you go.
Also do not try to attempt this by yourself you will never do it unless you have the correct tools to lift the gearbox into place and a car hoist to give you plenty of working room plus the helper gets the tools for you while you are under the car hahahaha.
hope this helps let me know if you have any specific questions.
thanks
