about all you can do is make sure its well serviced, and the pollution gear is not full of carbon, these days 202's arent renowned as a model of fuel efficiency

you will get 400-500k's off a tank in country driving

150-250 maybe on a city cycle

I get consistantly 400km/55L around town driving to work in my runabout VK 202 carbie. The trick is to try to drive around using only the primary throat of the varajet, when the secondary opens it will chew the fuel and you could get as bad as 300km/55l.
On the freeway I get 550/55L.

My carbie 202 has a bit of head porting, mild cam and a bottom end ballance and that is.

    cheers
    Scott

The old VK black motors weren't very efficient compared to today's motors of course but back in their day they were amongst the best in their class for efficiency. To keep them on song you have to have the emission gear connected and unblocked by carbon and all the valves in the exhaust operating and the EGR valve working and unblocked. The EGR valve blocked causes a lot of the troubles with pinging and poor economy as when this valve is worjing correctly you can run the carbies quite lean and therefore avoid pinging and gain fuel efficiency. Thats if owners have kept their vehicles in good condition but alas not always is this so!!!

I'm sure somebody told me once before a hiclone was no good, that's why i dont have one for my blue 202 due to some air blocking with a hiclone installed.

I've seen fuel savers on ebay that go on your fueline but i guess there no good if you have a metal line.

lol cool, and hiclones i know poeple who say they have like 15% better economy, and also i plan on using ultimate(aka vortex, shell plus, the higher octane fuel) and its only a cheap old commy, scott b, say if it wasnt looked after. you would recomend getting the exaust valves and egr valve checked out.

2 things you can use, when I built my good 202 head I used some rather large grub screws and just wound them in with an allens key. The other option is to remove the air pipe work and just the end off each pipe with a hacksaw and use the retaining pipe nuts and just weld up the centres.

Or you could just get an EFI 202 head which doesnt have the ports

    cheers

All I did was take an air pipe nut down to a local supplier and asked for 6 grub screws the same thread. I installed then with thread sealant and they never leaked in the 5,000km I had the head on the engine.

    cheers

Get some extractors that will help fuel economy, if i'm not mistaken the black 202 has a "1 piece" inlet and exhaust manifold with a butterfly in it that will open under ceratin conditions allowing fuel from the inlet to go straight into the exhaust. You may only save 5 litres a tank but that adds up over time.

I replaced the air pump fittings on my sons VK 202 around 40,000 k's ago. No problems at all. The air pump really does nothing much at all except attempt to assist with air pollution. Some rego inspectors may remember them being fitted but if you use the grub screws and remove all evidence of the pump you should have no worries. One less belt and a bit less weight from the pump has got to be good for the commie. Extractors are good but you may find that they heat up your starter motor and shorten it's life. The original manifild has a heat sheild to protect from memory. I used exhaust wrap and have had no problems since. Cheers

i'd say it could depend on tuning & timing.

but things like extractors can also play a role.
