hey guys
i have recently been playing with the idea of buying a clean Vh 6 and then droping a 308 into it..... i know i could just as easily buy one with a 253 or 308 in it already.. but i think i could really enjoy putting the 308 in my self..... is this a big job? what would i need to change besides gearbox, diff exc.....would i need a a engineers report? and how much should i be expected to pay?
your input would really be helpful...
thanx guys

if all you want to do is drop a v8 into it. then buy a 5ltr VH and get a vr-vs block and some heads and do it up while its outta the car and then drop a hot 5ltr into it. Save stuffing arounds with trans, diff, brakes, suspension, exhaust.

Check out my VH SL/E

It's not too hard doing the conversion, if you got the right parts and tools...
You'll eb alright keeping your original brakes and diff, but that also depends on the way you're going to drive it...
In the way of parts needed, you'll need to get your hands on some V8 springs, mounts, rear crossmember, radiator aswell as an exhaust system.
If you wanted to strengthen the driveline, a V8 diff and tailshaft would be recommended.
As for the option suggested by "VH SL/E", you will need to remember that VS commo V8 were all Turbo pattern, therefore, you'd need to replace the trans anyway because most V8 VH's came with a trimatic.
Hope this helps a bit...
ive just completed my 253 to 308 conversion. the way we did it was lifted the front end of the car off the crossmember and left the whole front end all in tact with trans still on the motor and wheeled it all out from under the empty shell. then wheeled in the 308 front end from another car and put the shell back down on it. it took 3 days to do the major stuff, but that included changing over rear ends as well and also going from auto to manual. changing from a 6cyl to a V8 would be more or less the same deal. thats the best way to do it if you're sourcing your V8 from another car.. transfer the whole lot in one hit. its a lot easier to put a transmission on etc while its not in the car. to do it this way, you would need a lot of space in a factory for example. and a solid beam that you can use a block & tackle to lift the car up from.
let me know if you have any specific questions about your project.
cheers, James
As long as you account for the fiddly stuff like brake booster, accelerator cable, wiring loom, radiator etc etc. It would be easier buying one done mate just to save money and stress. Do as said if you want to get your hands dirty and build a nice 5L to slot in.
