Gday all, first post to this forum.
I am currently a ford driver (I know I know) but I think I have an offer given to me that would be too good to refuse.
My neighbour has a schmick 1985 VK commodore for sale.
He wants $650 for it, it's unregistered.
The engine appears to be a bit oily (as they are).
The car was sitting for about 4 months since it was last started, and we poured some fuel in the carby and she kicked after about 3-4 seconds on the starter...
Was pretty impressed about that, even being a commodore :-P
Now what my question is:-
Is this car worth buying as a project car?
I know nothing about commodores however I know a good deal when I spot one.
There is not a creased/dented panel on the car, and its only got 140,000 original km on it!
There is some faded paint, and the interior is very well worn, but I can see some potential in the car.
What do you guys think?
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Cheers
Ash.
It's a good buy, VKs make great projects.
Finally seen the light aye...
All depends on your future plans for the car? Is it a I6 or a V8?
If it's a I6 & your planing on putting in a V8, you might be better off buying a std V8 model as they come with better brakes ect. I just picked up my second VK Berlina with new 2-pac paint, 308 with TH-350 & LSD with only 92,000 genuine kms for $700(it has been under cover in the back corner of a panel shop since 1998 as the owner didn't come through with the money for the paint job).
Long story short, plan ahead & buy wisley.
Good luck, & hey, either way it's gonna be better than your ford.

to the original poster, sounds like a good find. You can get another vk interior for peanuts these days (non calais). If you search the vb-vk section, you'll find lots of useful mods that are do-able to the good ol' 202. If its oily, could be just the gaskets (rocker cover, etc) that need changing.
IMO, go for it, but its up to you.
Welcome to the VK club if ya get it![]()

Nice find mate, and the deal on her sounds impressive!
She sounds like a good starting point and with lots of hours of hardwork, thinking anf fun ahead! Hey you could either go 8 or improve on the six!
There's a few sources where you can get parts for yah ride such as:
- Auto Shops
- Wreakers "You save money if you remove parts yourself"
- Ebay "Has some good bargins if you serach all night"
- Online Auto Stores "Discounts"
Hey if she's a 3.3 then welcome to the 202 club![]()
It is an inline six, with a black rocker cover, and the inlet and exhaust manifolds are on the left (passengers side)...
Seems like a good buy...
Has anyone on here injected one of these motors?
Its not worth the trouble of injecting a carby 202 there is just too much work for a little gain. Just get a cam, extractors and exhaust, maybe later on a YT head and rejet the carby and you'll be hummin.
The VK is the most developed and strongest (chassis wise) of all the VB-VL series.
You can get the complete injection set-up off ebay for next to nothing but if you don't know the motor then as stated above its not worth doing. What year is it?
yeah, youd be wasting your time injecting it, stick with the carby...
No wah to that!
Never late with ROB308...
I can think of somewhere else you can get good 'bargains' if you 'search' all night(j/k... as many a bargain has been found in my car late at night... gr!)
A 140,000 VK might not be as good as it seems however... mine had 125 on it when I got it... but the clutch was shagged, the engine worn, the rear control arm bushes are pretty much gone now - sadly in later life they get badly neglected and end up just as shit as a 250,000 car![]()
