    Default EFI VK, what mods?

hey i just turned 17 and got my p's, my first car is a vk efi andhave had for over a year, just got a RWC and rego. basically interested in adding a few simple yet effective mods but dont kno enough about cars yet. i know how engines basically work and im learning quickly but not enough to spend my money wisely lol.

Basically already i have 2.5 exausht with extractors, i also got a top of the line K n N POD filter for it and have just over a grand to add to engine. obviously dont wanna spend that much but thats my budget lol.

What do u think are the must haves for performance? any info appreciated

your probably better off with a K&N Panel filter inside your standard airbox than a pod filter, the stock aribox has a pipe that goes doen behind the headlight and takes in cool air, the pod will just suck in hot air from the engine bay

Exactly and the pod will give a drop in overall power as well. I used a K & N panel filter in my VK when it was a 202 and it worked great.

    cheers

you could fit thermo fans, does increase a little bit of power as the main steel fan is not fitted, but I found that it doesnt cool the same as the original fan

You can get a cam with the profile the way you want it (launching or top end). Yella Terra head, Starfire rods, shift kit the Auto and get a hi stall to match the cam.

Thermo fans can give you definately noticable increase in power but you must have a good shroud. many people dont pay attention to that 'useless' bit of plastic behind the radiator but if you dont it's not worth changing fans. Another thing with thermos is dont mount one infront of the radiator. it may boost cooling when your car warms up but while it isnt running it blocks an amount of cool air rushing through your radiator and your temp will rise fast then fluctuate as the front mounted fan switches on and off.

Some mods may not give huge power boosts but may make your engine last longer, good if you drive it hard. Such mods are straight-cut timing gears, a bonded harmonic balancer, tougher valve springs, etc.

performance wise many people recommend larger throttle bodies such as those from XF efi falcons and XR8s. renew your air box sensor as these are often rooted. electric fuel pump ( make sure it's for efi).

Plus the usual cam upgrades and so on. If your going for the top end... loose the auto.

Here's an article that got me thinkin.

In the end just remember its your car and you can do whatever you want and can afford.

Can you expand on the shroud thing a bit more please?
Do you keep the stock plastic fan shroud after fitting thermo's or do you have to build a new one?
    Any pics of an example??

As far as I know there are commercial shrouds available but Here's a site that covers building your own.

    http://www.the-rumbler.com/fanshroud-1.html

Far as i know you can some times use the stock shroud if your fan is the same diametre as the belt fan. but if your adding two fans or a larger fan building a shroud is often the best idea.

    Good luck.
