hey guys
i am looking at buying a rear axle set up for my VH commo. i have found for sale an axle out of a VB-VH. from a V8, and with rear disc brakes.
i dont have a V8 or disc brakes currently, but the modification is not hard correct?
and would this diff be LSD? or it was an option. the seller also states that the ratio is 2.78, does this sound correct? what would mine be now? and what would the difference with the new diff be?
thanks
regards, vincent
he says its a ten bolt salisbury diff.... does this help?
Umm what shape is the rear cover?(I have a pic just to show you the difference between small and large Sals diffs).
There was a 2.78 rear ratio for commodores, mostly the auto models got them. Now is your VH a 202 form factory?. The diff you have atm could be either 2.60 or 3.08.
To convert you diff to disc brake all you need is the rear rotors, brake lines and hand brake cable.
As for LSD diff it could be. It should have a tag on the diff filler hole.
Oh and picture time!!
The diff on top of the pic is the proper 10 bolt Sals, the one on the bottom is the smaller 8 bolt 6 Banger diff.

thats hte website that the diff i am loking to buy is, as you camn see, i dont have much time!
thanks
oh, and yes, my 202 is from factory. is the 6 banger diff much worse than the 8? or just weaker? would this diff improve my pick up?
thanks
Well I can tell its NOT a 10 Bolt diff at all, its just a 6 banger/253 diff mate. But still good for parts!

A big Sals diff is one tough diff, only the big 308 powered commies got them. The 6 banger diff is a little weak though.Originally Posted by bigg_vin

so the 8 bolt did not come in LSD? and what gave it away, ie, how do you know its not a ten bolt? im not doubting you, but the guy who is selling it rekons it is...
thanks
some 8bolts diffs was LSD, the SL/Es had them for sure, option on other models.
And what gave it away? Thats a secret!! nah when i had a look at the one on ebay and looks the same as the bottom one in the pic i posted above. The 10 bolt is one big diff.

The diff you have in your VH 202 would normally be a 3.08 ratio. You can check this by looking inside the engine bay and look for two silver ID plates. Depending on the year of production, they would be located in front of the radiator, just behind the grille; or in front of the left hand strut tower. On the ID plate with the Holden emblem it should have production codes. Look at the last line and you should see "Axle" then a code. If it is coded "GU4" then you have a 3.08 ratio, which is standard. If you have a 3.36 ratio, it is a performance ratio (eg quicker acceleration, less top end). A 2.78 ratio is more of an economy diff (slower acceleration, better top end and economy). I think the large salisbury diff is good, because its tougher than standard 6 cyl diffs, and also the bonus of getting disc brakes at the rear. However the 2.78 ratio will not do any favours for the 202 engine. It wont pull your skin off custard.
Ahhh that is very true. I must know to much or spend to much tme on the net. But the main thing is, your learning.Originally Posted by bigg_vin

Where are you located?
If your after axels I have at least 3 salisbury axels in the shed. All that needs to be done to them is the storage grease wiped off them.
cheers
