may be a stupid question, but how the hell does the steering wheel come off a VC commy?
i know of the splined shaft, and as far as i know there is just the centre nut on the actual steering shaft (under horn switch) to undo.
ive tried EVERYTHING, short of an angle grinder to get it off, but it hasn't budged. So what else am i missing?![]()

BTW, ive spent all day at it, so i needed a vent.
Same happened to me when i went pull my wheel off my calais but it can be done. The way i was shown was to undo the nut on the colum so it sits flush with the shaft. with one foot on the brake pedal and one hand on the top of the steering wheel, pull the wheel towards you with a little bit of force. Now with your spare hand grab a hammer and bash the nut on the steering shaft. If you pull the wheel and bash the nut at the same time your wheel should pry loose. then it's just a matter of unbolting the nut and taking off the wheel.
I HOPE THIS HELPS.
GOOD LUCK...

good idea, but i tried that, actually had my dad pulling the top, me pulling the bottom and my sista hitting the nut, didn't move.
thx anyway
even had a hydraulic jack on the nut with old seat belt strap around the wheel and it STILL didn't move.
You cant remove the nut?
You could try socket set, WD 40 , I hope it hasnt been welded on .. Even while using the socket set, try the good old trust pipe for a helping push .
time to go and buy the right tool for the job its called a steering wheel puller or if you have a flywheel puller for a mower it might do and a lot of cursing and swearing will always help
yep, steering wheel puller for the win. not that expensive and easy to use. and wont' damage stuff.
ECOTEC KICKED IN yO!!!!!!
Oh Dolphin14, i feel your pain mate, its a prick of a job.
I have to agree with the other guys, get yourself a wheel-puller.
Just a tip though (even though its a bit late) Don't hit the steering column, it can seriously bugger up the energy absorbing part of the column.
Good luck!
got wheel pullers, and sorry guys, they didn't work either. Thx for the tip, no hitting.
Ok a way I have gotten nearly every tight steering wheel off a car is to loosed the nut off and tighten the lock nut up to the nut.
Next go for a drive most of the time the steering wheel is loose in the first 5 corners.
cheers

If you have to ask questions like this, I suggest you buy yourself a workshop manual. It will answer this question and most others you may have in the future. You wont have to wade through a hole heap of dodgy internet posts from people who dont know shit.Originally Posted by dolphin14

I couldn't agree more on your idea of getting a workshop manual, it is a very valuable resource.
However i think you'll find that most but not all of the suggestion given could have come straight from a workshop manual or from the mouth of a qualified mechanic.
Also remember the general idea of these forums is a place for people to seek advice on problems they have. At a guess i'd say 75% of the threads in this forum are seeking advice, and there are plenty of people willing to give them some help.
Generally, its not a good idea to insult your fellow JC members. I don't know, perhaps you've had a bad day and just want to take it out on someone.
In short though, if you don't like what you see here... You know where to go!
Tigervh i don't know what youris mate, i have a workshop manual myself but you really should
take it elsewhere.

cheers, ive picked one up, it does say, and i quote " undo centre nut, and pull on steering wheel". WTF happens if that doesn't work, that was the point of posting, just for Tigers sake, i tried the manual, and when that fails, then wot, IT DOESNT SAY.
anyway, case closed, its done and finished.
