I have a VK berlina, standard fuel tank, ~60 litres i think. How much petrol should i actually be able to put in it? I fill it whenever the needle is on red and i almost always manage to put 40litres in.

From dead empty you should be able to put 55-60l in it.
From memory the VK had a 55L tank standard, I regularly fill 55-53L in my VK .
cheers

VB-VL had 65 litre tanks standard. Some HDT built VC-VL got either an 80litre or 90 litre tanks.

I had the exact same problem with my Berlina VK. Was told it could be like the lil float or measuring device in the fuel tank...most likely bent or broken or something like that. But that trapped air theory is also likely. My bet is that if you actually just drove till you ran out of fuel, your gauge would be right...I just don't think its the gauge for some reason.
Crossed over to the dark side...
Why would trapped air make a difference?
