G'day, Seem to be having a spot of trouble. Everytime my car changes gear i hear a pretty big clank coming from the diff, I've got a VH 202 3.3ltr with a trimatic auto. I was wondering if anyone would have any ideas why it's doing it? The uni is fine, the inside of the diff feels fine. Theres no cracks in the tail shaft. All though i've had the center bearing on the tail shaft replaced, it was running ok for awhile (still clank noises though) after time i think the center bearing is starting to become dodgey again. (raddles when i accelerate)
so any ideas on what could be doing this?
cheers in advanced.
The Uni's might look good, but they might not be. Usually the clank noise is the Uni joints. Some times it can be the back lash in the diff.

A lucky owner of 2 SL/E Commodores, a rare VB SL/E and a 2 tone VC SL/E. Just need a VH SL/E and have the set!
I had an severe shuddering problem when I was gearing down in the VK 'til I got my uni's done. They're not expensive and can solve many strange drivetrain probs.
the only time my car did this.......................the next day it ended up with this problem with the diff.
it didn't want to turn the wheels any more.
the tailshaft would spin but that'd be it.
seriously though, it could possibly be your flex-plate or diff too, as well as the other things the guy's have mentioned in the thread. good luck tho
Gonna take a good look at the diff this coming weekend. Noticed that some diff oil may be escaping, so i'm gonna make sure it seals around the diff bolt and top up the oil. Hopefully its something simple like that..
i had a vc commodore that used to do same thing,,as theat other guy said backlash,,mines been doing it for about 8 years now and its still going, any 1 wanner buy it as i got a vt now,,,400 bucks and its yours,,,good moter and gear box,,little rust..
Hey man, listen i dont know if this is your problem, but after i smashed my vk, i found it was making a horrable clunk as i accelerated. same deal with a trimatic in it, although its currently being converted to a 5 speed manual. lol, anyway, i found the problem after a while to be the rear sway bar stuffing somthing up. replaced the sway bar and the noise stopped.
