There is only 4 you need in a car.
Fuel
Speedo
Tachometer
Temp
Anymore and then it's just another gadget. Voltmeter and oil pressure guages aren't nessesary because it's something that isn't important if you know your barge is running fine.
I had an oil prerssure gaugue in mind for how it works with a manual gearbox, but i'm not sure if it woud work the same way with gears of an Auto.. I don't wanna put my beauty in gear and drive it to a point where she could start to.. up.
What about oil temp gauge? cooking the oil?
ive just got the stock sl/e guages, dont really see the need for anything else, not even a tachometer. Partly cos i cant b bothered and partly cos i dont see the need.
what about for race applications?
ECOTEC KICKED IN yO!!!!!!
I think of it this way. If a major rebuild has been done on the motor, check the pressure using guages and then you don't need them. If a car built for racing isn't going to last the race without guages, will it last with them?
They are a waste of time and money.
The only time I have seen them useful is in tractors and earth moving machines as they have at my cousins farm.
And as for tachos, why people have them I don't know. For street use, I'd leave them to all the ricers out there.
i use the stock one in my car just to get an idea of what the car is doing.Originally Posted by zoist

Yeah I have one on my digital dash too. If I didn't, I'd never add one because they are a gadget left for try hard ricers.

i upgraded my level 1 cluster to a level 2, so i could have a tacho, i like to see where its at, im not a ricer.
a race car might work well without guages, but as its being pushed nonstop, and if something goes wrong, gets too hot, etc, wouldnt you rather know what its doing from the drivers seat and be able to slow down if something happens, id rather lose a few spots babying it into the pits then to blow it up middle of the track.
I suppose it would be beneficial for a race car to have a tacho to change gears at the right RPM so you get maximum speed and use out for the transmission. Why do people need monster tachos in their shitty non performance barges for driving around the street?
Well i disagree about "no need for volt and oil pressure gauge". Why you may say well think of it this way. Just imagine your on a long drive, then all of a sudden the motor runs a little to rough. You look at the volt gauge, its reading only 9 volts. Then glance at the oil pressure gauge, its showing 0. You oull over to have a looksy and a quick fix.
Now the same thing, but with out those gauges, you just think "she'll be right" and bore more speed out of it then the motor really stuffs up.
I'm happy if ppl use the factory gauges, but hate the idea of these autometer, riced up and massive tacho gauges. Why do ppl wreck factory dash for these crap looking things for

If oil pressure guages and volt meters are so important, why do about 99% of cars not have them?
And if your oil pressure was zero like my old Sigma was, it isn't going to be fixable on the road side. It would be a dead oil pump.
Forgot to add that there are guages for oil and battery anyway. It's called dash globes which usually have a battery symbol that comes on when the alternator isn't charging and also an oil light comes on when there is low oil pressure. That's enough warning.
Not all cars have oil lights, heck haven't seen on in a VB/VC yet.
Also some cars don't have them cause its more a top spec thing. thats why in the VB-VK most likely the mid spec ones got them. Option on others though

I saw a monster tacho in a VK Calais once even though it had a digital dash with tacho. I was like what the? I reckon people just mostly add the things to make others think they are pros and to make their car look like it's got major performance enhancements which it likely doesn't at all.![]()
HAHA lol zoist always think does that big tacho make ur car go faster ?
Anywayz i basicly have my rpm tacho in cause i don't have one and i needed to know the rpm at the time and it looks goodand any new gauges will only require 2 screws again for the set as they will all be in a gauge mount/holder, so no wreaking the factory dash at all.
My dash is basic SLE/Nut it has the oil icon and battery etc, but i like the sle style dash better as you know what the real GO is.
If it makes you happy mate![]()
Just remember.
1. It won't make your car go faster.
2. It won't prevent an oil pump or battery failing.
3. It adds extra weight to your car.

HAHAHHA BOy's...... ya know, i've got the digital dash in my vk calais, i like you, see NO NEED to add a hundred thousand gauges and blinking lights to the already existant flashing beeping things >.< lol. The way i see it, Extra gauges are for looks and looks alone in most street cars... I mean, they serve little or NO use for anything else... other than just to flick up and down and occasionally blink lol. Especially in my case... These monster obstrenities will way down the car and cause it to loose max speed. rofl. (just joking, the 202 EFI is actually fairly gutsy)![]()
