hey guys, i own a vk with a 3.3 EFI red motor and i would appreciate some helpful recomendations on gaining more power. i recently installed a brandnew coil that gave it abit more grunt but my original coil was shot 2 s%$#. my brother installed a crow cam in it afew years ago, i got it checked out n its still fine i think... anyway, any info someone could give me would b great. thankyou
Cheers, Robbie
A VK with a red motor. OK...
You want more power? Go and buy a V6 VN or buy a 308 VK.
r the red motors not good? wat motor do u hav in urs?
Cheers, Robbie
Well the red motors are old. As far as I know the VK's only came out with early blue and black motors. Maybe only black motors. I actually didn't think there was a red 202 motor, only blue and black motors from 1978 to 1985. Are you thinking it's a red motor because the EFI intake manifold is red? If yours is a genuine VK with EFI then it's a black motor. The EFI intake pipes were just painted red. The black motors were the best of the 202 motors.
As far as i know, all VKs had "black" motors, only the rocker cover and EFi inlet manifold was painted red.
Anyway with money you can give the head a port and polish, bigger valves, air pod for more air flow.

I have a black 308 5L in my VK. The VK's only came out with 202's and 4 cylinders I think and 308 motors. The Calais only came out with EFI 202's and 308 motors.
The only red motors that were around were the 253 and 308 red motors from early 70's and beyond. As far as I know the 202 blue and black motor are compaitible.
I might be wrong though on thinking there was no red 202. I am sure there wasn't.
there was red 202s, from the golden HQ era to the late VB Commodores(also had the red 173/253/308s). After that the blue Backfire(Starfire)4/173/202/253/308 VC-VH then black 202/304/308 in the VKs
There ya go, a little bit of history

Thanks SL/E.
yehh sorry my bad, its a black motor. my dad keeps calling it a red motor but yeh its black! lol, anyway i have a diff that came off a 253 vh, with disc breaks n my bro said it was a lsd. wud it b worth while on my vk or the ratios n all that wudnt b correct. plus the break lines n shit like that?? ne suggestions? thnks
Cheers, Robbie
Well you have to find out what ratio the diff is first. Look on the on the ring thats near the diff yoke* the bit where the tailshaft bolts to) and the diff ratio is stamped on it.
If its a great ratio it would be worth while to throw it under the Calais

the diff i have in my vk is a Salisbury 3.08, im guessin the vh diff would have longer ratios for is off a v8 and it wud only b good for top end power

LOL , my Dad was calling mine a red motor as well..and I'm like uh no..it's a black 202 LOL... can understand how you'd get confused tho ..when ya find out stuff to make it go better, let me know! I've got the same engineOriginally Posted by A-TEAM AUTOMOTIVE
yeah last week i had a merc coil installed in the 202. mate, it goes alot better and is alot more economical then b4. it doesnt blow black smoke at all just some vapours which my dad said is ok. i has a crow cam installed from when my brother used 2 own it, im thinking ov port n polishing but fuel prices these days r stopping me from doing that. my exhaust is 2.5" straight thru whic was off a studibaker, it gives d car a nice tone. but it doesnt go as good because my diff is on it way.![]()
Cheers, Robbie
if your so desperate for power you have to forget fuel economy when it comes to 6's
I have a 85 VK 202 3.3l EFI and i dont know if it is blue or black how can i tell? I did think that it was blue but after reading previous posts on this thread im not sure anymore. i did think the blue motors were the EFI's and the black motors were the carby's can someone plz tell me.
Thanx
All VKs got the black 202s both carby and EFi., none were ever blue.

The black motors were only EFI I think. EFI was introduced with the VK.Originally Posted by big_c_43
