Living in the city and having to go through lots of traffic lights everyday an automatic transmission is the best option for me.![]()
She's a stock standard VK 3.3 efi with a traumatic that gets me about 3000rpm @ 100km/h, its slushy and getting tired.
Is it possible to fit a later model auto box (VS or something) to an EFI 3.3?
Would it be worth it?
Should I just get the trimatic rebuilt?
Any ideas welcome

I'd try and rebuild it. I think the rebuild kits are about 200 bucks for a complete kit. You might get a new box from ebay or the wreckers for around that price.
How does it perform currently?
For some weird reason (I got an auto too) I put my foot down sometimes and dont move (just sorta revs)...then it feels as if it kicks into gear and i just get sorta pushed back into my seat...im guessing this is the gearbox?? It's annoying as.
I am not 100% sure as I ain't a pro, but doesn't the torque converter act like a clutch on a manual so it may be faulty? Don't know to be honest. But My brother did have tranny leaks all the time and when it virtually ran out of oil, it was basically doing what you are describing.Originally Posted by fentos
hmm well I got no clue. lol. (sorry for hijacking your thread by the way traindriver) my bad.
The trnsmission might be slipping into neutral. that's what mine was doing when i gave it heaps. So i got a new transmission put in cheap coz we know our mechanic well.Originally Posted by fentos
I had the same prob with my transmission, it'd slip when I push the accelerator and around corners, though I recently had it serviced and it's running perfectly now, 140 bucks but it runs like new.
Probably needs a service but failing that you can buy a band kit for around $80 from any auto shop, (ie: Repco, Autoone, autobarn). Labour might cost a bit though. Worth investigating.
As for changing trasmissions to a later model, anything after VK's are computer controlled and unless you do a full conversion it will cost you a fortune.
Some of the early EA falcons had 4 speed auto's that weren't computer controlled and will bolt up to a holden motor with the right bell housing.

speak to dellows or crs as conversion kits r made to bolt up the t700 to the 3.3 bout $500-1000 including a box and tailshaft moddswell worth it over the vk tri
vn\p are not computer controlled they r cable kick-down and u use a t350\400 speedo cable. for the kick down get a vk cruise bracket and use that .
wouldnt bother going to a turbo type box behind a 202, they suck too much power, you can get your trimatic built properly, ie extra clutch packs in top, shiftkitted and full manual valve body if you want for arond $1000 on a 6 cyl. a tri is strong enough for most street applications if built properly. dont bother with the turbo boxes unless youre desparate for an overdrive. quite a lot of the quicker streetcars that run at the drags are usign trimatics where they can get away with it.
i agree with cane_it, rebuild the tri much better than a turbo type, have u checked vacuum pressure at the rear of the auto, it is common for this line to block up at the manifold.
VSII auto prob, wondering if you guys could help?? Car deosn't want to change gear when its cold, but works fine once warmed up. Could this be a sensor problem?
Kain
do you mean getting stuck in first? sounds like a sticky governor, simple problem for an auto trans place to rectify, although it maybe electronic sensor prob- i dont know anythign about the newer commo boxes, my old torrie had that problem on a freshly built trimatic, went full manual valve body (when i had $$) and it was no longer an issue.Originally Posted by darkmoon

hey mate, thats the gearbox slipping under preasure, u need to replace the box, a service aint gunna help you much
its a valvebody that replaces the automatic function of the trans, ie you HAVE to drive it low (1st) second and Drive (top), costs about $200 installed, you cant down shift into 1st until you're almost at a stop though and it takes some gettin used to, ive smoked quite a few people in manuals with mine.Originally Posted by whitevc
if you want it to chirp the tyres into 2nd then get a chrome-moly servo piston and stage 2 B&M shift kit (they do make em for 6 cyl tris as my torana had one) and get em to boost the oil pressure a bit, you'll shorten the life of a tired automatic though, best to start with something new or near new.
the one i have behind a 308 daily driver is tough as, no issues after 2 years, you will go through unis and bend tailshafts though, thats the only drawback.
Know of anyone in melbourne who does it? Im interested..Originally Posted by Cane_It

here's the details of the bloke who supplied me a brand new one, have a chat to him, i have no qualms about recommeding this bloke, he takes a good deal of pride and care in what he does. he was recommeded to me by Soderstrom PTC (google Phil Soderstrom, he's the automatic guru)...Originally Posted by whitevc

Stick with the Trimatic I reckon. We rebuilt ours & finished it off with a new Trans Pump & Torque Converter.
