Alright my brothers 202 black motor has a lot of oil sprayed on the right hand side inside the engine bay and underneath.
vkberlina suggested it would probably be leaking side plates. I will need to replace those gaskets. Is there anywhere else where oil might be leaking from? It's pretty bad because whenever the car is parked somewhere there is a patch of oil left on the ground. Thanks.
if its only on the RH side, check around your oil pump and fuel pump gaskets... leaks can also come from the dizzy seal... clean it all up, take it for a drive, then check it out...
also check the rocker cover gasket, these are renowned for leaking because people dont seal them properly. Also overtightening the bolts will warp the tin rocker cover and cause leaks between in the area between each bolt. Cast alloy rocker covers eliminate this problem as the metal bwteen each bolt is rigid.
Also sump gasket while you there. Dads VB 202 had a massive leak below the sump dipstick.

A lucky owner of 2 SL/E Commodores, a rare VB SL/E and a 2 tone VC SL/E. Just need a VH SL/E and have the set!
Thanks for the sugestions. I will start with the side plates and see if that helps.
My VK was leaking from the rocker cover. I just replaced the gasket and put some gasket goo. have had no oil leaks since then. 202's are notorious for this.
This oil leak is beyond just a rocker cover leak. Thanks for suggesting it though. I am sure it must be the side covers.
Could be a combination of a few leaks. A rubber gasket is about $30 for the rocker cover, I was fed up refitting my rocker gasket every 18 months. Rubber gasket stopped it in its tracks and cheap compared to a new cover.

It is the side covers. Leakin' a bit. A rubber cover gasket is good but on his car, it ain't worth spending money on it. Only fix the side covers to save money on oil because of topping it up all the time!
Haven't told you yet. Seeing that you have a 202, I'd strongly recommend you replacing them. It's an easier job for you! You need to remove the ignition coil and the air conditioning compressor (in your case not!).
They are a pretty common item and they can be bought at Autobarn for $5.99 each. They didn't have them in pairs.
Clean the 6 bolts with a rag and put some medium threadlocker on them and do the bolts up firm but not super tight. Make sure that the plates are straight. i.e: Not bent.
Good luck Goon.![]()
Repco and Burson should have them too. Just ask them for a pair of side plate/cover gaskets for a 202. They are made of cork.
I only had to remove a couple of leads and the ignition coil is held on by one bolt. It's an easy enough job.Originally Posted by Goon

Nah mate. You might as well take the motor out and degrease it then respray the whole motor. It would sort of look not right if you just painted the side plates and the rocker cover. But if you resprayed the block and all, then it would look gold.Originally Posted by Goon
