Gday all,
I recently bought a varajet II from a wreckers, cleaned it and put a kit through it. Although now I've fitted it and there are a few problems.
The car started once and was running for around 10 seconds, then conked out and wont start again. I've been fiddling with the idle and air/fuel mix but can't seem to get the motor to start anymore. The hoses are all fitted correctly except for two, both just near the head, I've put them in the pics below.
Also there is smoke coming from the hole in the middle of the rocker cover whenever I try to start the car (also in pics). Is there that should normally be done when a recently serviced carby is put back on? Any tricks of the trade that will get my car back on the road?
Please help!!
Put some aerostart or start ya bastard spray into the carb and crank it until it runs fine. Try that.
Has it got an anti dieseling solenoid on the carby? If it has this may have carked it or it has disconnected itself and would shut of the idle circuit making it hard to start.
It has an idle shut off solenoid. The vacuum pump I think may have carked it and also the part that sits just above the vacuum pump seen in pic below might have also died. I'm gonna try replacing these two tonight and see how it goes.
Don't know if I'm allowed to post the diagram below so please let me know if I need to take it down, I thought it might be helpful to someone dealing with a varajet in the future.
If you mean the smoke coming out of the air breather on the top of the rocker cover, that's blow by which can be bad valve seals or rings?
The red one controls the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve; just make sure it’s blocked down where the pipe feeds into the carburettor.
The green one controls the EFE (early fuel evaporation) valve down where the cast iron manifold meets the exhaust pipe; make sure it’s sealed where the pipe should connect to the vacuum tree.
Hopefully from the pics you can see the pipe lay out.
That is the cleanest carb/rocker cover/inlet manifold area I have ever seen on a 202. You should be proud!Originally Posted by 82VH

Very clean set up! Did you install the metal vacuum trees yourself? If so how did you do it? I've found the five way tree but couldn't get the 3 way one last time I was at supercheap, definately got to get one next time I go shopping, they are much better quality than the dodgy standard ones.
To eliminate some of the smoke would an engine gasket kit help? I've also been wondering if the emissions gear is working correctly, at the moment I am getting on average 240km's per tank and was thinking that the emissions gear might be affecting the fuel economy.
What did you use to paint and clean your rocker cover and other gear? It looks show quality.
Thanks for the help man, I'm off to the wreckers to get the green and red parts for the engine tomorrow and I'll have it all fixed up in a day or two now![]()
Had the same problem with my last VK which had the factory carb fitted. It wouldn't start until I dropped a 50ml of fuel down its throat. I have a mate (mechanic) who cut his teeth on varijets and he acid bathed the parts, rebushed it and put a kit through it. Cost me $500 but it was worth it. The car had heaps of power, never hesitated, started first turn of the key in the dead of a Bathurst winter (-6degC) and almost halved the fuel bill.
Worth a look honestly

Musn't have been a mate if he charged you 500 bucks?!Originally Posted by darkmoon
Anyway, I have seen shiny new 4 barrel 600 Holley's on ebay for 400 bucks. I want one but the EPA will hate me if they'd catch me with one on my VK

hey guys just wondering if a varajet has got a flat spot will putting a kit thru fix it or make any diff........cheers
Rebuilding your carb can make lots of differences in performance. Depends how bad the condition of it is.
cheers mate guess i'll give it ago any idea how much kits are
got mine for 50 bucks from repco
I found Autobarn cheaper. The kits don't include a float though.
thanks guys
It's not really me, it's a gandad car i picked. I just keep it clean. I've got some more picks here

Has it got the standard exhaust manifold? The butterfly that joins the intake to the exhaust manifold might be stuck open. I think its like that on black 202's? Blue 202's are like that. Fit some extractors and piss off that fuel wasting exhaust manifold.
i am only 16 so bare with me but if u get extractors do they replace the mani fold ?
Yes, they replace your existing exhaust manifold.Originally Posted by 16 vk boy

i had the same problem with my vk today, wouldn't fire, it would turn over ok but it just wouln't start. check your ignition fuse, if thats okay pull out a spark plug and check your spark whilst holding the spark plug against the manifold,..(get a friend to turn the car over while you look.
How much cheaper? I have a spare carby I want to re-kit and clean.Originally Posted by Slim

40 from Repco? dammit mine was fifty something.
