Okay I've been doing some work replacing the carby, sparks, various gaskets, oil and dizzy over the weekend and now have a very useless car because of it. I can hear the starter motor turning over but no idea why the motor isn't starting. Is there any way to test the ignition coil? I have connected a test lamp between the coil and the dizzy and get a constant pulse but don't know how strong the spark/voltage/etc and don't want to spend more money without results. I've also tried swapping the old stuff back onto the car but again the engine doesn't start.
Thanks
Is there any way to test the timing belt in a 202?
A 202 doesnt have a timing belt, it has timing gears.
To test for a stripped gear remove the oil filler cap and look at the rockers and have someone crank the motor over. If the rockers move the gear is ok.
Do you know if the dizzy is set correctly? It could be mistimed or even the dizzy could be 180degrees out.
cheers

Points or elec dizzy?
kay well I've replaced the dizzy with an electronic dizzy but it seemed to have completely screwed everything upnow I'm stuck trying the old EST based dizzy to get everything to work. I've already tried setting the timing by lining the timing mark up on the harmonic balancer and then slipping the dizzy in carefully with it's arm pointed at the timing mark. Then if it doesn't work I'll turn the distributor around a bit and try again, and repeat as necessary. From what I've understood the timing is automatically set to a certain degree using the EST, it can be out by a certain amount and compensate automatically.
I've only got myself to do the work right now, is it possible to take the rocker cover off and check if there is any movement while turning the engine over?
Here mate, I did a bit of a how to for timing, it may help you.

Probably the easiest way is to have the car in park or neutral with the hand brake on. On the starter motor you have a trigger wire, run a +12v wire to the starter motor and you will be able to see the engine cranking from the engine bay. If the rockers are moving cam gear is ok.
The carbie VK also runs a mechanical fuel pump, it is driven off the cam so another way might be to disconnect the fuel line and stick it into a tin and start cranking the engine, if fuel comes out the cam gear should be ok.
Seriously dont worry about the EST system stick to the electronic dizzy.
Are you getting spark to the spark plugs?

Battery good? under charged maybe..
Could test wiring out with a digital muiltmeter. "see if a wire is live or not"
Possible be starter motor
Are your leads in the right firing order with your spark plugs? "Greg book good ref#" My firing order is different to what it says on the manifold as some ppl use that![]()
ps. Once upon a time i had a sigma brand new battery and it wouldnt kick over, this car had not started or moved in over 2yrs i pushed it to my houseThe new battery wouldnt start her so i connected athe jumper leads upto a F**cked F**D 6cyl and that didnt work, 2nd a tried a v8 battery and that didnt work .. Last of all i got my mates car and it was another 4cyl Honda and made in the simlar ere... and what do you know.... she kicked over!
Moral is maybe you might need a similar motor to jump start her. she may need more power to bring her back to life![]()
Okay,
done a bit tonight, I'm getting spark, starter has just been replaced with reconditioned unit, couldn't be that, the rockers are a rockin, so the cam gears are ok. But since I've been trying to start it for a few days now there is no longer enough juice in the battery, so I'm gonna have to fix that now.
Thanks for everyones help, I'll see how things go once I've charged the battery, if that doesn't work out I'm gonna replace the dizzy again but this time with a unit from a VH blue engine (I used an electronic dizzy from a red 6 out of a HJ this time, could be a problem?)
If you have spark there is no point in replacing the dizzy. Check other things, the three things needed for fire: heat (or spark), fuel and air. If it wont fire and is timed properly then one thing is missing.
Yeah!! got the car working and am now damned happy about doing it without going to the mechanics, thanks to everyone for the help!I had to use the EST distributor but am going to the wreckers tomorrow and getting an electronic distributor from a VH and I'll clean it up and slide that in.
A red dizzy won't work as they use points, you need a blue electronic dizzy to run without the est, also it needs a little rewiring if you need a diagram i got one or vkberlina might have one on his site. Another thing is you might need to unplug the est unit i'm not sure as mine blew up when i changed dizzy's so i never unpluged it. Get a good dizzy make sure it's tight and the black box is in good condition and the wire connections are good. Hope you don't pay too much.
Ok i noticed you said the red dizzy was electrionic. does it have that black electronic module hanging off the side? if it does then i'd say you should be able to use that if it wasn't running with that did you wire it up properly? it's been almost 4 years since i did mine so it's a bit hazy but i could have a look at my vh set up or have a go with the diagram. Ok this should help its for an efi vk but they use the same dizzy so it might help.

no black box, a metal one though, pic below
I was following this guide for the installation:
http://gallery.oldholden.com/ReaperH...onic_Ignition/
Did everything the same even the wiring from the battery with the relay to make sure that 12V goes to the set-up (heard that only 10v or about that goes to the coil because of the EST distributor set up needing less than 12V)
yeah thats looks like the right one, is that the one off the red motor? can't get the link to work but i'm sammy got it right he's done a few efi conversions so let us know if you get it work
