Try welding the piece on the inside, then bogging over top (outside) to give the finish.

If you wanted to solder it, you'd be still trying to get the solder to bond on your 85th birthday.
MIG welding is really the best option. Steel weld. Arc welding will just burn holes in the metal.

What sort of tools do you have?

A 160 amp MIG can usually weld up to around 6mm and right down to 1mm. Avoid the gasless ones. Try and use gas with the welder as it makes a cleaner weld, but gasless ones with the wire coated can be handy if it's windy but usually makes the weld a bit grubby. Arc welding is best of thicker steel because it's pretty harsh. Soldering is pretty weak because it has 60% tin and 40% lead.

Yeah the migs aren't cheap. You'd want to get one that is at least 140 amp I'd say. They would be around $450-$600. Many of them are made in Italy so it should stand up alright. It helps having friends though. My cousin is a farmer and has everything. Heck, he even has a mechanic pit and a 50 or so ton hydraulic press!

yeah man i reckon welding it is the way to go, even if you did get the solder to stick, it wouldnt be very strong, if you can get a mig it would probably be easy, i did mine with an arc on low amperage, worked fine, im no engineer or anything, just keeep practising.
