i have finally gotten the shits with the varajet II carby and am wanting to put on a weber 34adm (or possibly the 32/36) carby on my basically stock 1980 blue 202 (with extractors). i have very limited mechanical knowledge. i would really like someone in the know to give me a heads up on a few issues i have. i want an adapter to fit the weber to the original intake manifold.
1. does the adapter plate just bolt on, what adapter do i need (model no.)?
2. do i need to hone out the manifold at all to allow the weber to flow easily (if so, do i need to take off the inlet manifold to do this)?.
2. will my fuel pump be sufficient to handle the carby?
3. how do i change the jets if the carby is from a larger engine (or what is a good carby to get that will suit the blue 3.3 other than xe xf 3.? litre)?
4. what air filter can i put on top the carby that will fit and be under the bonnet(model no.)?
5. how do i modify the accelerator cables to fit this new carby (a guide possibly?)
6. what pipes go where, what can i block off?
7. how do i know if a used carby is any good or how do i reco one?
I know this is quite demanding of me but i am hoping that many of you on here have done this exact conversion and are willing to shed some light or point me in the right direction. i am young and broke!
cheers, cecil
Maybe putting a Holley 350 might be easier?
i thought that xe-xf were 4.1L..

Redline do an adapter plate, bolts onto the manifold and the carb bolts onto it. When I was looking at putting one on my carbie VK I was going to pull the inlet manifold off and drill & tap new mounting holes for the new carbie & plug the old ones.
It you do decide to do any machining work on the manifold take it off the car. Filings & rings dont mix
The Ford inline was a 4.1L, there are jet kits available, my engine was modified so i was going to try it with the larger jets, a carbie specialist will be able to jet it correctly for you.
I was going to use the standard VK air cleaner but cut out & weld in the ford centre so the car looked stock.
Accellorator cables & piping I didnt go into but should be similar to a holden, have a look at a ford workshop manual to see what they are used for and connect them to the correct places for your engine. eg vac advance for the dizzy, maybe EGR etc...
really a second hand carbie is an unknown, check for play in linkages & butterflys, pull it appart & check for wear in bushes & sleeves. If you buy one from a wreakers, tell them what your doing, maybe ask to pull it off the car/engine that way you know where everything goes.
cheers

you can buy carby kits and also buy a can or two of carby cleaner and strip the carby and give it an all over clean as best you can then slowly put her back together. A manual would be helpful as well were they have a diagram of the carby you working on.
