You need to take the instument panel out first. If you undo the screws around it you can (gently) pull it out enough to get your hand behind it and undo the retaining clip to release the speedo cable.
It should only be wiring from there and it shouldn't take too much effort. Don't go the grinder, you'll be sorry in the long run.

grinder for the win. i pulled the dash out of the vh in several pieces.

(lol @ vh-holden). yeah the panel wont move even an inch i been trying to get at it behind everything to undo it.. is there a clip i could feel for? or should i just get underneath the car and undo it from the box?

There is a retaining clip right at the back of the speedo. Remove it from the box if you want, it might give you enough movement to take it off the speedo.

oh, just re-read. there is a bundle of wires that plug into the back, it's off to the side. there is also the speedo cable which is a spring type clip. if your car has a vacuum guage, there will also be a hose going to the back of the cluster. this might be harder to get off, i just cut it with scissors. just be careful not to cut wires with the scissors.
i did that before the car got pulled off the road and sent to the racetrack![]()

the cluster is pretty easy, pull the wiring plug out, the spring clip is a push type, i think it is on the bottom, just push and pull the cable same time. then there is 3 nuts on the bottom of the dash, you shoudl find them with a torch while looking up ,been a while since i did mine, dont go the grinder, take your time, patience is all thats needed, lol
not sure if much help
awsome thanks ^_^. yeah i had another go today and quit b4 i got cranky haha. who woulda thunk that rebuilding a car would be so stressfull :P

You think striiping a car is stressful, wait till you need some new parts, thats when stress will come in.
Now the dahs are a bugger to get out, but take your time, no need to rush things, and it will come out.

you might find that the cables behind the instrument cluster are cable tied to the dash behind there somewhere for some stupid bloody reason and so you wont be able to pull the cluster out far enough to get your hand in behind. Mine is like this and because i got the shits, its been apart for about 5 months now!
