Bought a vk 202 a off an 81 year old only owner and stripped it down to replace crank bearings and rings and discovered that it had been bored out to 60 thou.
I love my bucket
Yeah its probably got a reco engine in the car, all gem, higginbottom etc bulk reco engines are bored 60 thou & 10 thou skim on the crank, most enev get a reground cam.

what do you mean by gem vkberlina?
gem engines are recoditioned engines. its a company that exchange your wasted motor and $$$$$$$$ and they give u a reconditioned motor. or u can send them yours and they can do it 4 you. you can tell if its a gem engine or head coz the put a liitle badge on the front of the motor about the size of a 10 cent piece.
Hey i was just actually making sure that was what he meant because i actually work for hm gem engines
Oh just so everyone knows we bought out repco engine reco as well so you still get the same shit qaulity motors
Hahaha yeah the guys at a repco engine building place near here cant even check valve clearances when they build engine![]()
It wouldnt surprise me if they throw them together with a rattle gun.

Hey scott how did you know they use rattle guns? they use them on everything even bolting the heads to the block. I saw this one guy a couple weeks ago strip the thread on the head bolt when he was putting together a gen3 motor. All i can say is im glad i don't put the motors together. I just fix the heads.
why would ya go 60 thou instead of 20 just shortening life of motor and amount of times you can reco it
I love my bucket
thats right, i try to tell people to only go to the maximum you need to get a good bore, but they insist that the extra cubes from 60 thou is going to make a big difference to performance!Originally Posted by Rosco666

The reasont hey go 60thou is its a guarantee that every block bored will be 60thou so if your building 10 6cyl holden engine you buy 60x60thou pistons economies of scale.
The rattle gun thing I guessed when it too way way more torque than it should have to strip down a GEM (I wont say built) thrown together engine.
Dont worry about stripped threads thats what helicoils are made for :P
funny thing is I have used & owned a few gem rebuilt 202 heads and never had any big problems with them, one head had large variances of spring tension appart from that it was ok once i replaced the valve springs.
my last 202 engine I went 40 thou, I would never go 60 thou on a block.
cheers

also depends on how many times the engines been rebuilt too id say!! may have already been bored 10, 20, 40thou on previous rebuilds???? if you go straight to 60thou its a bit silly cause as has been said, thats it, cant be rebored again!!
I was thinking 60 thou on my V6 rebuild, thanks guys, I'll reconsider.
Kain
my advise would be get it bored out only enough to get the bores dead right, going any further is wasting the block!

We Do ok You right about the boring everything is set to the same standard so the parts we use are all the same. helicoils i do about 30 a day mostly on on manifolds and spark plugs they get stuffed when they strip the motors with you guessed it rattle guns. the springs I'm not suprised about we mostly re-use the springs. We do at least 100 heads a day so 3000 a month and get about 5% claims on head problrms so i think its not bad considering the quality of the people we employ. I always get a laugh out of the brouchre when i read it, "fully qualified" indeed.
