it's not a 179 or 173 it should be 186 or 202
my vactioner has a 202 blue motor and my mates vh has a 186
No 186 is 3 litre. Also no Commodores came from factory with 186. Its a 173, 2.85 litre. VB-VH had these.

A lucky owner of 2 SL/E Commodores, a rare VB SL/E and a 2 tone VC SL/E. Just need a VH SL/E and have the set!
Its either a 173 or a 202. The engines in the VH were the 2.85L (173) with 73kw and the 3.3L (202) with 83kw. A 186 is a 3.0L and as not available in the VH Commodores.
It woud be a 173 with 73kw and 187NM, whilst your VB 202 engine would have 66kw and 221NM.
So I guess both have their advantages. The 173 has more power, the 202 has more torque.
the starfire engines in commies are rubbish... turf it ASAP... actually, my bad, the 173 wasn't a starfire, but anyway, unless its a 186 or onwards it aint worth having in a commie! :P
seriously, get any 202 (and there are SHITLOADS around) and LOTS of parts therfore... whack on a decent carby, exhaust and decent dizzy, coil and ignition and you will be laughing, get double your power in no time... same engines were getting up to 110kw in the VK's and that was stock also... (and if you have a 186 block around, put those heads on, high compression, high torque... go son!)
Yeah the VK's were more powerful. They had the black engines, 86kw for the carby 202 and 109kw for the EFI 202.Originally Posted by Morgasshk

I realise this has already been solved, just a bit of clarification.
As for putting a red VB motor in your VH. You won't be able to register it in QLD if you do. The red motor won't meet the emission requirements for VH year model. Generally putting a more recent motor in is ok. I'd say go with a black 202(3.3) for more power.

the black 202 is the torquer engine, i regularly lit up 225's from the line with flat accelerator... went hard... ditto on spikes emission comments, it's a bitch, but it the truth. :P
thanks guys ^_^ that made it crystal clear lol. now to find a black 202 someware hehe. the gearbox form my vb should fit straight onto a black 202? for now ill just putter along hehe.
