My VH Commodore wagon has developed a problem. It is a 2.85ltr 4 speed manual all standard.
Vehicle starts first time every time from cold.
Running standard unleaded with flash lube
Under heavy acceleration it coughs and splutters and eventually dies, leaving a fuel smell. I cannot restart immediately.
Under normal driving from cold start I can drive for about 15 minutes no problems then vehicle dies, leaving a fuel smell. Attempting to restart can be a problem sometimes it does and it will not hold idle.Sometimes it will sound like a backfire under the aircleaner.Sometimes it wont and I wait and restart after about 10 minutes.
Items that have been checked and replaced
Air cleaner
Ignition leads
Spark plugs- New plugs have a carbon(black) deposit on them after this problem occurs (cleaned and reinserted)
Distributor and rotor.
What is next?
This is driving me nuts
If anyone can assist in solving my problem with a how to do description. It will be most appreciated.
could be the jets in the carby are blocked. have you changed your fuel filter?. I dont know much about these but I know the slightest bit of crap in the carby will affect it big time. Carby rebuilds are fairly expensive maybe look at upgrading it to another type e.g. a holley
Sounds like either the fuel pump or fuel filter. another possibility is the needle and seat.
I havent replaced the fuel filter.
Timing is set a little out to compensate for pinging
have you tried to run the car on PULP instead of the regular unleaded?.

A lucky owner of 2 SL/E Commodores, a rare VB SL/E and a 2 tone VC SL/E. Just need a VH SL/E and have the set!
have tried other fuels - no change- problem still occurs
I,d replace the pump before anything else.
