    Default mates vc woes

my mate just bought a vc wagon dual fuel auto 202

now today it will not stay running on gas ( just conks out when you lift off the acclerator ) and when you a revving it it sounds like the engine is missing.

on petrol however it will rev at 2000rpm when idling and when revving it it sounds fine ( no miss )

what could be wrong with it???
    We got rep back, yaaay!

Some sort of blockage in the gas system maybe?

Try adjusting the idle screw on the mixer to get it to its highest idle point. Take off the mixer and inspect the diaphragm for wear or loose parts like the spring or screws. Sounds like the mixer isn't doing its job. The converter sounds to be ok, but take off the gas hose on the mixer, and while cranking, see what sort of gas flow is coming out. No smoking or KaBoom!

Make sure the radiator has plenty of fluid in it.

Also another point to check, on the regulator there should be a drain plug similar to what the motors sump plug looks like. take the car for a good burn until the engine is hot and then take the plug out of the regulator. There may be a fair bit of gooey brown crap come out.

ps, it would pay to turn the gas off at the tank first just in case.

This is probly an incredibly stupid question, but did u run the carby out of fuel before you flicked over to gas?

That's a good point. Usually it would cough and splatter and run like a complete barge if you didn't. Floods the carb.

it was on gas when he bought it because the petrol cap broke
he first swichted it over to petrol when he was having probs with the gas.

BTW he fixed the problem with the petrol ( sticking accelertor cable )
still idles a little high though.
it wont run on gas still but i will suggest he look at those things u guys mentioned
it does need a new gasket on the carby could that be a problem as well?
    thanks a heap.

If the gasket is a problem, there would be a vacuum leak. You would notice the car struggling with throttle, like lack of power etc if there was a vacuum leak. Replace the gasket if it's suspect.

Now the idle. On the left hand side of the engine bay (kerb side), put your head under the mixer and you should see a medium size phillips head screw on the carb with a point on the end of it and the screw should be pressed up against a cam which has several different stages on it. With the car running, adjust the idle screw by turning it anti clockwise until the car idles at a nice speed. The high idle when warming up should be around 1000-1200 rpm. In drive when the car is warm should be around 650-700 and in neutral/park should be around 800-850 rpm. Adjust the idle screw when the car is fully warm. i.e: Driven for 3-4 km or idled for 10-15 minutes.

    Hope this helps.

Replace the carby gasket before adjusting the idle. The high idle speed could be caused from sucking air in through the faulty gasket. The gasket could also be causing your gas problems if you are loosing a lot of vaccum which will make it run lean.

Just in case the original poster doesn't know what a gas mixer is, it's the air cleaner assembly which is mounted on the carburettor with the gas hose coming off it. The idle screw for the gas mixer is located at the very top centre of the mixer. You may need to unscrew the cap with a spanner and then you use a medium size flat blade screwdriver and turn it clockwise and anticlockwise until you hear the engine at its highest idle point.

Just thought I'd add that as there is a lot of folk around here not sure about things lately.

check the cable adjustment on the ring thats on the mixer, and the mixture screw thats usually located under the gas mixer, adjust it to get maximum revs and check carefully for air leaks between the carby and the snorkel etc. i cant be of any more help im afraid.

Cane_It, he has the car running a varajet on a 202. No snorkel and the idle adjustment is on the top. The mixers on 202's are upside down on the carb.

If your havign other idle problems mate, check your plunger that sits on the throttle area, it has a gold pin... if it stil has a plunger that is, make sure the plunger cant move.

    ok update 4 u guys.
the reason its not running on gas is because of a major hole on the exhaust manifold just under where it joins on the block.
    runs ok on petrol too.
    thanks for your help guys
