    Arrow Painting Cars Black!

    Hey all....

I am currently deciding on what colour to paint my commy, its yellow at the moment and pretty shabby at best..

i am thinking a nice not to shiny black coat, i recon vks look very nice black, and have the bottom half another colour such as red. I have discussed this with my mates but they all recon painting any car black, especially mine due to like 3 dints in front end will make the car still look crap.

i want to know if black is a nice choice, or what colour do u think works well??

    thanks people

Respray it yellow. I think black VK's look terrible. Black just doesn't look good with VK's IMO.

^^^ I agree. There is a heap of different shades of yellow about.

Don't go black unless you have a completely dent free, immaculate car. Black has a habit of making even the tiniest little dent stand out like all hell.

I agree with rest about the yellow. It'd look awesome! But a nice deep metallic blue would look sweet as well. But ultimately, the choice is yours.

I saw a yellow VK once and I wanted it. Yellow is a colour that looks very nice IMO. As 1vngal said, a metallic blue would look nice but you'd want to do the whole lot including engine bay and inner doors.

I think I was quoted about $200 or something for 4 litres of acrylic lacquer at a place like Autobarn. 4 litres should be enough to do the job, not sure about the entire car though. You would thin the paint to about 2-3 TO 1. You would need to fiddle a bit to get the right flow. If you have an air compressor and gun, you could do it yourself. Painting is an art though. You are either half decent at it, or completely shithouse at doing it. I am not sure how good I am. I will see when I respray my quarter panel and bumper bar in the next few weeks!

Black absorbs heat, making the interior hotter than normal, and it shows up dirt very easily.

It'll be hot mate in the day or out in the sun if its a hot area u live in trust me !

Better off using black for a secondary colour rather then the one colour.

The cost of the paint varies heaps. The type of paint (2-pak or Acrylic) whether it's metallic or not etc, all contribute to the price. 2-Pak, and metallic paints being the more expensive.

4 litres is plenty to respray an early holden, especially if thinning at the 3:1 ratio.

Slim, you're spot on when you said "painting is an art, you're either half decent or shithouse" But you should do alright if you follow the basic techniques and pre-work to the letter!

I know I ain't that good at painting inside the house (that's why Mum does that!) but I will soon find out. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know crap about it, but I am going to learn real quick. Probably within 5 minutes of pressing the trigger lever on my paint can.

I think there is a difference between painting with a roller and painting with an air gun. I look forward to seeing how I go.

Well, honestly, it's not hard at all! if I can do it, anyone can.....

The main thing to remember is, 1. To test your gun before spraying the vehicle. And test it everytime you refill the pot. And 2. Keep your painting motion consistant and even.

Stick to those 2 things, and you'll do fine!

It's easier than painting by hand (my uncle painted his first car, a Mini, bright yellow by hand and apparently you could see the brushstrokes)

Make sure you apply light even coats and try not to make it drip. Also, mask everything up well, it has a habit of spraying all over the place (overspray)

If ur just spraying the outside of ur car then 4L would definetely be enough....I used just over 2L doing the outside of my VH.

Go to www.ppgcarpaint.com to suss out some colours.....they have heaps of samples on there.

4L of Monza Red in acrylic I bought for $100 nearly 2 years ago...still the same price now. And 4L of Tiga Mica in acylic or 2pack is about $170 (I got that price about a week ago).

Clear is around the $60 mark for 4L, not sure about primer...some people don't use primer tho.
