I was about to comment on the crank!

What exactly have you done? Full balancing + lightening?

Here's my bottom end for comparison:

(I've got it mounted on a proper stand now)

It's out for a full rebuild - I'm sending the crank off within the next fortnight or so... so I'll keep a keen eye on your progress.

What other work are you having done?

full knife edge balance and everything checked on the crank i think the crank has cost me about $850 ish so far.

block has been decked squared bored and honed 40 up and the oil gals have been done when u do a 202 its best to fix the under oiling probs

    Nice mate!

Does anyone know a rough figure on how much it costs to get cranks balanced? I'm rebuilding my blue 173 and it's going in soon to get all the machine work done, but haven't looked into getting the crank balanced.

No point balancing the crank - I've been asking a few shops myself. Need to get the entire rotating assembly - rods, pistons, flywheel and pressure plate done also - but it can be done for under $400.

yeah i got a race balanced, crank, rods, pistons, harmonic balancer, flwheel and pressure plate all done for $300 i think it was.

mercury, are you having a special oil pump or is that cover on the side just to keep the engine sealed up ?

what about head and cam, rockers etc, come on give us all the details!

yeah it is, but it appears to be bloking off the oil pump holes, weather thats for remote oil pump or just to seal the engine up while its being built is another thing.

Just to let ya know, I ended up getting the crank assy balanced. Cost bout $170, and that included crank, timing gear, balancer, rods, pistons, flywheel and pressure plate. Hopefully she revs pretty hard now!
