hello,
when i start up my lil beast it make a loud tapping noise. I know where its coming from but don't know how to fix it and how much it'll cost t fix at a shop.
It's the little wheel the fan belt sits on right down the bottom (theres 3 in a row) and its the one closest to the block, It is loose and moves from the block to the other wheels when running.
i cant find any pics on the net showing the wheel thing but its behing the alternator in this pic

When i spray some water on it, It dosn't make any noise for about 30 secondsi might use some wd40 or grease and see if that will help.
please help
I cant get pics right now but if you look down on your motor it's the one right down the bottom and there is 3 in a row. The one i'm talking about is the one closest to the block. Or if you get under the car it will be right in-front of you.
.Update.
Anyhoo i used my grease gun and put a bit of grease on the pulley and then started the motor and it made it 10 times worseso i ripped out the hose and gave it a wash down on full blast and AND now it's not making any noise

but i'm waiting for it to start again, although i did about half an hour of driving last night and its still not making the noise! so i'll see what happens.

belt grips fine! i used a little pipe extension thing on my gun so i could get right in there and grease the pulley and not the belt lol. i also thought that the grease might break down the belt so i cleaned the belt to make sure there was not grease on it.
hmmm are you talking about the pully on the crank ? if so that main belt thingy as you call it is your harmonic if thats making alot of noise i suggest you get a new one asap ive seen what can happen if it becomes unbonded anyway the other thing i was thing is the tensioner for your aircon? if so those things are terribly easy to replace and to be honest need replacing alot lol hope that helps
there is a belt that go's for the alternator to the pulley i'm talking about. I cant find my camera cable so i cant post pics![]()
you wouldn't happen to be talking about the harmonic balancer ? thing in the pic with the white and black sticker on top of it ?
if so and its wobbling, replace asap! if its a pulley screwed to the front of the harmonic balancer then i'd be checking the three retaining screws, they might be loose.

yea its in that area but theres 3 like where the thing is with blue dots on it is. What will happen if i don't replace it? if its the harmonic balancer? and will i have to pull the motor out to replace it? (sorry i'm new to this)
cheers pat
ok well if its where the blue dots are on my picture then thats the water pump ... could just be that the bolts that hold the pulley to the pump are loose, if so half inch spanner should sort it out, if its not the bolts it could be a shagged bearing in the water pump.
either way you shouldn't need to remove the motor, just maybe the radiator/shroud/fan etc ...

no its the harmonic balancer but i was saying "on my motor theres pulleys were your this is with 3 dots on it and the alternator and there another thing where the U shaped bracket is next to the harmonic banlancer.
How much do harmonic balancers cost and where do i get them from? and how hard are they to change? And sammy your a lifesaver
About 100 bucks for an after market balancer. I think the 6 cyl ones are pressed in so you'll need a pulling tool.
you might be able to get it on with the engine still in the car, it will be a pain in the ass though ... maybe a block of wood through the grille and smack it on with a hammer .... if you can heat the balancer in the oven for 20-30 mins before hand that might help get it on (as it will make it expand)

i can take the grill, bumper, radiator and apron off the car so there will be a big space there so i will still be able to put it on.
thanks for your help guys.
cheers, Pat
would this fit?

yep should do..
lol i havn't heard that one in a while hahaha
DON'T FIT A RED BALANCER!!
Seriously the red doesn't have a counterbalanced crank and hence needs a different balancer.
You might be okay but the reason balancers are fitted are to stop your crank snapping at high revs. You don't want that.
Supercheap were clearing out their balancers not too long ago, I saw a black 202 one on the shelf for $20 - $30 IIRC. Check it out.
