tri matic problem

Have a intermittent problem with the trimatic in my vh 6cyl.
From cold when you take off it goes through the gears and when hits third gear it freewheels like you are in neutral until you back off and it drops back to second ...then you accellerate again until it does the same thing...back off and then accelerate again it selects gears ok and continues to work ok until it sits for about 3 hours and the oil cools down and the fault reoccurs and you go through the same process....anyone had that problem before?
Does it sound like it is in the valvebody? ...I was hoping I wouldnt have to pull the whole auto out .............it has been recoed many years ago and since it was my parents car hasnt ( I have inhereted for my sons first car) had much use as in probably 50000k since then.

check all the obvious things like;
fluid level.. this is critical in autos
does the fluid smell burnt? if so i'd get a good trans builder to look at it and or try and hunt down a good running trans off one of the many commodore sites on the net if your capable of changing a trans yourself.

I would give the trans a service and see how it goes. The filter could be blocked and only allow enough trans fluid through when the fluid is warm and thinner. Someone might even have put in the wrong trans fluid which could cause problems. So just drain the fluid out, adjust the band and change the filter
