Hi guys
I know this isn't to do with commodores...
I am going to be replacing the harmonic balancer and the seal on a red 202 on my brothers HX.
I was just wondering, when you put the new harmonic balancer on, do you tap it on with a hammer, does it stop when you put it on far enough on the shaft, does it only go on one way so the timing mark is in the same position as on the original harmonc balancer.
Any advice for changing the seal.
Also, is there anyone here that knows a bit about re-spraying sections on a car.
Thanks guys
it only goes on one way, located by a keyway in the crank snout
easiest thing to do is to get the motor to TCD on cyl no1 before you remove the balancer, look into the spark plug hole and see if the existing balancers timing mark is correct, change balancers and remark timing mark on new one... too easy, not sure about the seal though.
You need a puller to get the old balancer off, then hook a large screwdriver under the lip of the old seal and lever it out. Smear a bit of grease on the lip of the new seal and tap it into place with a hammer. If you have a large socket or piece of pipe the same size as the outer bit of the seal, hold it agains't the seal and tap it with the hammer to make it easier to get the seal in evenly. Next line the groove in the balancer up with the key on the crankshaft and tap the balancer into place. It should only go in until it bottoms out on the crank so it cant go in too far. Its best to use a bit of wood over the balancer so you dont dent it when you hit it on with a hammer
Thanks guys
I have removed the balancer and changed the seal no worries.
I can't get the harmonic balancer back on. I can get it about half way and then no more. I checked the internal diameter with the original and it is the same. I am using a piece of timber on the front and tapping it in with a hammer.
I will also add that the original was a struggle to remove.
Any ideas.
Check that the key in the crank is sitting in level and not sitting up on one end, also make sure the key has no burrs on it ( file off any high spots if it is burred). If it all looks good then you just have to hit it a bit harder, the last bit does need a bit of force.

its a compression type fit that keeps it on, so you'll need to give that bit of wood a decent whack... theres no bolt that holds it on like on a V8.
The jobs done.
I ended up bolting the old balancer to the new one front to front.
Then I hammered it on.
Thanks guys
