I have recently posted a thread about installing a VK EFI in a VH but I failed to mention the why...
I have a 3.3 black motor that has had some work done on it in the past. Apparently due to the modifications I needed to get a speacial disributor but I could never afford it. Since then ive always had problems with timing and wasting fuel. Anyway a few days ago the bottom end started knocking while idling. But when I give it a little gas the knocking vanishes?
Is this my bearings or timing or something else?
ggggggrrrrrrrr.....!
oil pressure by the sounds of it. but have you got a timing light??? worth a quick check to see if its timed right
Its hard to say what it is unless we can actually hear the noise. It could be big end bearings, but the oil pressure light would be on if they were gone. Cracked pistons will also knock when idling or it could be a noisy alloy timing gear if one is fitted
I was previously asked if i had low oil pressure. When the car is in park there is no knocking but when i put in drive it knocks at around 13psi. Could this be the driveline, mabey the torque converter? It sounds like something is making it slugish...
I would say at a guess that it is the timing gear knocking, because when you put it in drive the revs drop a little and the engine will run a bit rougher so any backlash in the timing gears can be heard. She might just need a bit of a tune up so the revs don't drop down so low in drive. I have seen heaps of blue and black motors run rough because the plug gaps are too wide, should be 38 thou and i have seen them still running with 80 thou gaps. Set your timing to 6 Deg and check the idle mixture, then hopefully it will idle smoother and the knock will be gone. Your oil pressure seems OK to me.
