What sort of 4 speed box did the VH Commodore's come out with?? Were they coupled to 202's and were they a decent box?? Thinking of coupling one to a hot 202 in my Vh...Replacing the 173 and original 5 speed with a hot 202 and 4 speed (m20 or m21) Any objections, critisicms or suggestions, any help appreciated thanks fellas, I'm also going to link it together with a heavy duty exedy clutch,
Any comments appreciated,
Rhys
I would go the 5 speed, but it's old and worn and i'm looking to put something that has been recently reco'd, and i've seen 4 speeds going much cheaper than any 5 speeds....does anyone know if the 4 speeds (m20 or M21) will fit up to my new blue 202?? Are they a direct swap into the car from the existng 5 speed???
If neither of these boxes are suitable for a 202, does anyone know what is??
M20 is the 6 cyl version should bolt up just fine.
The M21 has a longer input shaft to suit a V8 bellhousing
If the 173 has a factory 5 speed, forget it, weak as piss. If the M20 isn't your cup of tea, try for a supra 5 speed then. The M20 are good for a hotted up 202, can take the power/torque easy. But the shifts are a little to long IMO.
Oh and i don't think a M21 V8 box has a longer input shaft, i think its shorter. Well the one in my sle 5er is only a few mm shorter than the 6 cylinder M20.

A lucky owner of 2 SL/E Commodores, a rare VB SL/E and a 2 tone VC SL/E. Just need a VH SL/E and have the set!
Not sure if the bellhousing on the M20 will fit over the blue motor clutch. You might need to use the red motor flywheel and clutch. The red motor clutch is slightly smaller diameter and the pressure plate bolt holes are different.
The M20 bellhousing will fit over the blue motor clutch as i ahve just pulled one of a blue motor and it was a blue motor flywheel and clutch last weekend and sold it to mate also they m20 come out in the WB's which had blue motor's in them.
Also as stated the M21 was a v8 gearbox the m20 was the 6 gearbox i have one more here i dont know what condition it is but i would say it would suite rebuild
Get a 5 speed Celica box or get a M20. They are strong.
There's also the MC6. Called a torquemaster I rekon.
And yeah everyone I ask says the M76 5 spds are weak as piss. I've never had any trouble with mine tho...I got a clapped out 173 (getting rebuilt now) and I use to thrash the guts out of it, I blew 2 salisbury diffs now have a borgy under it. Not sure how the M67 will go with my hot 173 (well 186 when I get it back :P) but hopefully it will last a while.

M20 will bolt up just fine, if you need a bell housing I have 2 for sale.
M21 has a longer input shaft and wont bolt up.
Also if your considering gearbox options also look at a T5 out of a 6cyl Falcon they go pretty cheap.

thanks guys, been alot of help, ordering my clutch 2morro and on the hunt for an M20 gerabox...I've been told that the actual box it self didnt change over the years, so i should have no worries about getting a clutch to suit!? Let us know if anyone knows any different
i got all three boxes that came out in the 202 range m20, m21 and the Torquemaster, i know i have 4 or 5 shifters for the m20/m21 box there not the strongest shifter around and my Torquemaster hasnt missed a beat apart from all its grinding noises lol
oh ad my m21 is a 6 option it came out a torana and its now on a blue motor lol
the M20 also had different ratios to the M21. There were also M20's fitted behind some 253's, but as said the input shafts are different between the V8 & 6cylinder boxes
there is also a M22 which was an extra low ratio box fitted behind the 1 tonners
