Now I know this is prolly a stupid question to ask coz it can't really be answered until the car gets dyno'd....but just thought I would ask coz someone might have a rough idea.
I'm rebuildng my 173, and I'm aiming for 80rwkw. They came out with 73kw at the flywheel. Just wondering if yous could tell me if it would be possible with these mods:
- Fully rebuilt.
- Bored out to a 186 with new Federal Mogul pistons.
- Fully balanced crank.
- High compression 173 head (Might get it shaved as well).
- Crow performance valve springs.
- Crow 35603 cam (2000-5000rpm rev range).
- And of course all new gaskets, lifters, bearings, rings etc etc
Oh yeah and can't forget the straight cuts haha, that's one of the things I can't wait for most, I just wanna hear those things whining haha![]()
A 5spd will be sittin behind it, not sure if that would make much of a difference.
So yeah, do u think 80rwkw would be possible? I drop my motor off next week to get all the machine work done, so hopefully should have it back within a few weeks, hopefully a month max (Gotta allow for xmas and new years).![]()
I've asked ths question one or 2 times on another forum but no one gives me an answer haha.
Cheers,
Danny

I'm not the greatest whiz on engines but looking at those mods I certainly can't see why not!
The displacement increase, cam and HC head I think is worthy of increase of 7kw at the wheels. I personally wouldn't be surprised if I saw more. But like I say, I'm no engine whiz
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
I dont know what our 186 EH stock car put out but we had triple SU's on it and had to rebuild the bottom end twice in one year.
Snapped a rod bolt first time and spun a bearing the second.
But boy did it go once we had the carbies tuned.
We raced it at Woomera in the mid 80's.
You dont hear the sound of the six that much these days so good luck with the rebuild.

When you put your straight cuts in ,hang on to your old ones as the whine sounds good but it will drive you crazy in a couple of weeks and you might want to change back .Also if you have the $$$$$'s why not go for a 12 port head as well. What sort of carby you going to use?The old 186 powered GTR XU-1 put out 134kw, Good luck with you project
there are three types of people in the world , those who can count and those who can't
To make it more powerful you'll need bigger valves, bigger pistons and bigger carb. Then you'll have more power but the down side is doing crap like that means you'll be using lots more fuel.
Thx heaps for ur help everyone! :d
Nah I rekon I'll love the sound of the straight cuts... can't wait to hear them haha. And I have a blue 173, which has the 12 port head.Originally Posted by Dayvo

You should easily get 85rwkw even more if your lucky. Only time will tell![]()
Sounds ok. Generally speaking all your power comes from the top end. The head gaskit down is just there to get the power to the transmission. A nice head, mild cam and carb/extractors will more than get you the power you are looking for.
Spend some money on the head with a nice port job which will let the whole system breathe (critical to nice hp)

my old torana motor had high comp and pretty good headwork and a 450 4brl holley, it had no troubles punching out 85rwkw
