Weird Noise?

I own an 84 VK non-EFI. When i drive my car makes a noise in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. 4th is fine and also when i am in neutral it makes the noise when i let the clutch out but when it is in its gone. Can someone tell me what this is?

Layshaft bearings in the gearbox are buggered. The layshaft in the gearbox might also be worn. Best put a bearing kit through it before it strips a gear. It should be OK to drive for a while as long as you nurse it
