Hey all
It it illegal in Aus/QLD to remove the muffler and install a straight pipe instead?
Extractors - pipe- resonator - pipe - muffler.
Thinking emissions wise..
Cheers
[EDIT] maybe its best to have flanges on the pipe and muffler so i can swap if needed.
On my VH I had the extractors go straight back into the cannon on the back, with nothing in between. One of my defects was coz I didn't have a muffler and he also said I needed a cat.
But.....my VH (and ur VC) was designed to run on leaded petrol. Unleaded cars came with a cat, but leaded cars came without them. The coppa told me I needed a cat and a muffler. So....I did some reading and it was then I found out I didn't need a cat, and well the cannon is a muffler so my zorst was totally legal.....except for the noise coz it was farkin loud....but I just chucked my silencer in and that was all I needed to do.
So yeah, just make sure u have some sort of muffler in ur exhaust somewhere and u should be fine.

As long as it doesnt exceed the db then you should be fine. The resonator is the last "muffler" so to speak. Most people cut it off and weld on a straight peice of pipe. I had a 21/2 system then went to 3" from the diff backbloody loud. Imission wise i doupt it would change at all.
Exhaust mufflers shut the car up and do very little for emissions (other than a cat if you have one). In short - you need to keep your noise level under a certain db depending on your car's year of manufacture. Check out your local state rta - they should have that information for you.
In most cases you can't legally remove a muffler/resonator and on an early Commodore you definatly can't remove the rear one (found this out myself years ago). On the other hand, you should be able to get away with it most of the time if you drive intelligantly. (just don't squeal when you get caught).
Reaper
For VK's you cant exceed 90dB @ 3300 RPM in S.A
I'm guessing it would be the same from VB - VK
In NSW 1983 and earlier actually are allowed a higher DB I forget the exact numbers, I will be going through noise testing when I get my VK engineered & registered early 2007. I will be able to quote exact numbers then.
Odds are its on the NSW RTA or state equivilent websites.
cheers

im going to get a 2.25in system made in about a month i have extractors and im just fitting a single muffler in the middle of my exhaust where the 1 is thats on the standard system and thats it my vh didnt have the rear resonator when i brought it and ive never had any problems from johnny law about it so im not fitting 1 to the new system
Basically whatever the car came with when first new is what is basically legal. Having a straight through exhaust with only a hotdog on the back would likely be a no no. It would be like removing the catalytic converter off a late model barge.
And to add to the topic, I know my cousins XB's and XC's all only have a single muffler and then straight out the back. I am sure many old Holdens would be like that too and because it was built like that back then, it's legal.
The last thing on earth I would ever even think about is removing my middle muffler. It's a dumb pointless idea. Besides you don't want your car sounding like shit and if you want it to sound like a V8, then get a bloody V8.
I dont think anybody here thought about that idea mate, that sounds silly a very stupid idea...
Besides if somebody wanted the idea of an 8 sound it would all come down to car power, exhaust & Torque could possible get a sound close enough, i know the idle sound can be achived.
I plan to replace mine with another vc, or i might weld a plate over the hole as im losing abit of compression![]()
I can tell you now, anyone who knows about cars and stuff know that a 6 cylinder will never sound like a V8 ever. Do what you want to a 202, but at the end of the day it will still sound like a 6 cyl motor. I have heard all sorts of people doing shit to their 6 cyl motors anything from Falcon's to Commos 85 models or 1998 models. If you try and make those sound like V8's, all you would end up with is a shit sounding car. You just can't do it.
And Goon mate, I am not having a go at anyone, don't get me wrong.![]()
hehe. Yeah nothing wrong with 202's but if it gets to a point where you think it's going to cost more than a V6 conversion like Scott says, maybe back off.
At least with a 202 you can still beat about 90% of cars on the road, meaning all the crappy 4 cyl cars![]()
