ok guys
here is a few interesting articles , for guys wanting to power up there early model Holden's and VB - VK Holden Commodore (1978 - 1985) but not have the hassles of EFI tuning issues and expensive specialty workshop assistance
Just slap on a carby and a distributor on a Gem3 and later versions of this chevy monster
Here is the special timing cover and a few bits to make it possible to fit a distributor on a Gem3 chevy

There are cast inlet manifolds to sit a carburetor and use a screwdriver for tuning rather than a laptop and special expensive software which is out of reach for the DIY guy wanting to play around with a new chevy.
I know some people will jump up and down and say why waste all that electronics in controlling the fuel and ignition settings , but lets face it some people still want the simple carburetor and distributor setup.

lets here what you have to comment on this idea

looks good mate, if i hadn't just got a new motor recently, this'd be an option
Im EFI through and through, I give this setup merits but after you frig around with getting the thing to fit why not just plug in the EFI and drive away the engines come with wiring harnesses & computer why not just use them its not as hard as most people think.

With the tossing around of fitting a chev motor to an early model commodore i dont know. I'd say get a vn 5 litre ( cheap rebuildable) without buying the injection, rails etc,
Ive seen em for $400 in need of a rebuild.
Get a pro stroke 360 kit and rebuild it. The kit is two grand and you end up with much better components as well, Scat crank, rods etc. with much better power characteristics.

The LS1 Conversion isn't that hardand I'll say if you did the VN conversion properly it would be close to a LS1 anyway financally, and i dont think the engine characteristics would be any better then a LS1, but the above described options in the original post may be a good option if someone got a bare bones LS1 for next to nothing.
No its not hard... Just a stroked vn v8 is a straight forward fit.
I actually contemplated doing this at one stage (LS1 on carb), when i did the homework i was much better off going with what i stated, stroked vn v8 on carb.
Honestly bro i cant agree with you that its the same price, i got on the road for a bit over 4 grand, ok i concede i put it together myself but if someone 'can' get a LS1 for 'next to nothing' in good condition then i say yeah, go for it.
But whats 'bare bones?" You need the entire engine/trans, harrop make the manifold to fit a carb and you need the timing cover and parts to run a dizzy. Castlemaine rodshop are good people to talk to if you want to shoehorn one in.
Performance? I dont know man, you'd need a fairly tough LS1 to to kick my strokers ass.![]()
a stock LS1 isn't that special but does have a lot of potential though
